NORTH ISLAND ROADS.
+ » RECENT IMPROVEMENTS. [THE PRESS Special Serrice.J AUCKLAND, January 3. A great improvement in the majority of the North Island roads in the past few years and the consequent opening up of many districts hitherto neglected by tourists was referred to to-day by Mr C. F. Bennett, of Auckland, who recently returned from a,; motor tour extending over 1200 miles..' The main road from Auckland to New Plymouth, via Mokau, is in perfect order, but Mr Bennett thought the roads in Taranaki were not so good. Ho attributed this to the doing away of toll gates, which meant less revenue for the local bodies. Mr Bennett met a traveller who had gone from Auckland to the Mountain. House on the New Plymouth side of Mount Egmont in eleven hours, taking the train from Auckland to To Kttiti, and doing the rest of the journey by motor. Further south, tho roads through the Mauawatu Gorge and thence to Napier and on to Wairoa were all in first-class condition. Perfect roads were to bo found from "Wairoa toward Waiknremoana, bun the last stretch 1n "WnikarenioanaHostel was in bad order. Tho Government, however, intended to make an early improvement there. Noticeable improvements had also .been made to the road from Wairoa toward Gisobrnc.
