H.M.S. WAKAKURA.
ENGINE TROUBLE ON VOYAGE
H.M.S. Wakakura (tlio Red Canoe), flie Dominion's new minesweeper, which is making a prolonged voyage from England, »4rived at Samoa on December 30th. She will next call at Suva, and is expected to reach Auckland about January 19th. When the Wakakura sailed from Portland on Juno 15th, it was expected that she would complete her voyage early in November, but a series of accidents has delayed her by over two months. Between Capo Verdo and Bermuda engine trouble developed, and she was laid up at Bermuda for repairs. Thence all went well until the sweeper had passed through tho Panama Canal into the Pacific, when story weather again delayed progress, so that, when sho left San Diego, California, for Honolulu, alio was a month behind schedule. But again the engines gave trouble, and the Wakakura broke down at sea. On November 20th she was picked up by the Ameijcan cruiser Pittsburg and towed to Honolulu, where she was again laid up for repairs. A Canadian-built "Castle" typo vessel of 547 tons, the Wakakura carries a crew of 23 all told. On arrival in New Zealand she will bo used as a minesweeper, and also as a training ship for naval reserve men.
