FIREMAN INJURED.
♦ FALL FROM FIRE-ENGINE. Through slipping off the back of a fire-engine on Wednesday night, W. H. Tooley, a member of the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade, received injuries to Ms head and back. The brigade received a call at 9.10 o'clock to Palmer's road, North Beach, where an unoccupied house, belonging to Mr F. Peters, was on fire. On arriving at the fire it was found that the brigade had to proceed about half a mile further down the street to get to a water hydrant, and when the engine was nearing tho water. Tooley seized the hose, intending to drop it to the ground so that it could be run out when it was necessary. The reel wa3 not fixed as firmly as Tooley thought, and the weight that he put into lifting it caused him to lose his balance and fall heavily to the ground. Owing to the darkness he was not found for some time, and was still unconscious when a passing motorist discovered him. The superintendent of the brigade was notified, and the injured man was immediately conveyed to his home and attended to by Dr. Stevens. It was found that his condition was.not serious, but that his back and head were injured. Mr Peters's house was burned to the ground, but a house nearby was saved.
