CITY'S GROWTH.
—* — IN SIXTEEN YEARS. SIGNIFICANT FIGURES. Some particulars relating to Ihe. growth of Christchurch, are given in the report of the City Engineer (Mr A. H. About that time also, the only building on the Cashmere Hills was the Convalescent Home. Kedclills was all waste land and Clifton's first house is only some twenty-five years old. What is now North Linwood, North Richmond, Avonside, and Spreydon, was all farm land. Approximately twenty rears ago St. Albans, north'of Edgeware road, and the block east of Papanui road from limes to May's roads, was subdivided into building blocks, and Tiiccarton find Fendalion from sparsely built residential districts have become populous suburbs. Only eight years ago, Christchurch comprised within its area Linwooil, St. Albans, and Sydenham only, now it includes Bcckenhnm, Fisherton, North Linwood. North Richmond, Dallington, Opawa, St. Martins, Bromley, Papanui, Spreydon, and Woolstou. In sistoen years in the City area some live thousand dwellings and about eight hundred buildings have been built, which is quto. I town in itsolf, and since 190 over-a period of twenty-two years, the population has grown from 48,789 to 118,402, an increase of no less than 69,66,, a very significant total.
