AXGAS DEFEATS PAGE. 'J ha bO'i'.li Canterbury Tenuis Association's lotruaiieDt vras concluded yesterday, iu dull but fine weather. One or the lest single;- g-iniis seen in South Canterouiy ior tame time was thut in the men's championship Siul, and there was u Urge crowd present. The -ame v.-aa between V. I. Page, last year's champion, and C. Angas (Chrisichuichi. Eight through the tournament Angas had put up sound performances, and hii. exhibition against G. Olliricr, the e::Nct Zealand singles champion, wraa such a splendid one that the opinion was fc.ely expressed that he would fully extend Page. Expectations v:erc more than realised when defeated Ptgc in three straight sets, 13-J, i:-l, 8-6. Anga3 was at his very l-esl, and he gave a b.ilUant exhibition. Ke showed no sigii3 of nervousness, an-J the majority of his sho'.a were remarkably true, v/hiie his backhand was eafe. It wa3 not rs solid 23 thai of Page's, but the latter nvs made io cover so much ground that he fe.l ar/av tov.vrds tho end of the game. He .showed 'marked improvement in th? third, tu*. consistency won out in the long run, and .\vz-i took the set, 8-fi. Both were (riven a splendid veception, and the mesident of the clu'o, if'' c - S. Hammond, in presenting Angas with the Cramond Cup. heartily congrahiMcd him on the fine exhibition he had given Mixed Doubles —Final: Fulton and Miss D. Manchester beat Sheppnrd and Mrs btedman, 3-G. 0-<. 7-5. In the final of the mixed doubles the latter two players did not show the form they showed in previous matches, and if Sheppard had not missed some not phots the result might' have been different. Fulton and Miss Manchester showed splendid combination, and both played good games. NOTES O.V THK PLAY. Augas's play was very accurate. He kept ft'ood length and was able to make some remarkable recoveries. The match was really won on Page's errors in driving. Page missed a great deal through playing with a lacerated finger, and he was missing his fore- i hand shots, being unable to get this reverse stroke in. At times he' showed traces of his usual form, and on these occasions his opponent did not sec the ball. Angas showed splc:v ] did court craft, and kept cool throughout. plavi»» steadily. He does not yet show sufficient severity when opportunity occurs, and he is rather weak in smashing from the | centre courts. His service, although well placed, could also be greatly improved upon. J He shows very fine control of the ball, but | before he can go much further he must iu- i crease his pace. The play really consisted of Angas knocking back Page's shots until i the latter hit them out on a misplaced fore- , hand.

The tournament throughout has been :i most successful one, and players have been most enthv.sisatic in (heir praise of the man- | ner in which it was conducted.
