In 1926 there were 17 bankruptcies.

WAIMATE. Tradespeople report that the business transacted during tho Christmas and New Tear period was quite up to that of previous years though, had the weather been fine on Christmas Eve, all records would have been broken. During the week prior to Christmas business was exceptionally brisk and indications pointed to remarkably good results for the period. Bain intervened on December 24th, and baiiness dropped off. However,, fine weather during the New Year resulted in brisk business which brought tho returns for the period up to those of *ny previous year. Farmers in this district • for some time have been dissatisfied with the •ystem followed of - grading produce. The Waimate Farmers' Union have taken tho matter up and arc calling a Meeting of all farmers and potato growers for Saturday, when tho grading of produce will be fully discussed, and as » result it is hoped that some lew system of grading will be evolved to replace the present method. As the result of the great success of the' last road cycle race it has been decided to hold another race in tho near future. Generous trophios have been presented.

During the week-end members of the 'Waimato Motor-Cycle Club j de an •ajoyable three day motor trip to Lake Coleridge, leaving on New Year's morning. The party made Methvcn on the first day where they camped overnight. Next morning the journey was wntinued via Mayfield and Mount Som<rs, the party soon arriving at the Lake and power station whero the •lay was spent. In the evening a return was made to Mcthven from whence on Monday morning the return journey *as made by way of Ashburton. Home -, was reached in the evening. No was experienced throughout the Pfip, with the exception of one puncture. The roads were found in good •rdcr, and the hills, though steep, were easily negotiated. Those, who took advantage of tho trip are satisfied and look forward to a similar experience Inder the auspices of the Club. Mr A. Hume, who lias been on a motoring trip to the Southern Lakes, Murned to Waimate vestcrday. Mr and Mrs A. MeMaster, Dunedin, are staying with Captain Munson, Waimate. The Rev. J. D. Wilson and Jus son Bruce arived vesterday from New Plymouth, to spend a few days in Waimate.

M. fiose has been successful In passing her Plunket examinations. Mr and Mrs A. C. Middlcton and family are spending the holidays on « motor tour. Dr. and Mrs E. C. Hayes «ad family are occupying their house during their absence.
