* NEARING THE END. (rHESS ASSOCIATION TELECIRAM.) AUCKLAND, January 5. Interest is 'becoming keener as the conclusion of the New Zealand chess tournament is drawing nearer. Results o£ sixth round:— Davies v. Miller (Queen's Pawn game)— Miller rushed his king's side pawns up in a fierce attack. Davies countered in the centre and obtained ,a passed pawn on the seventh. Tho position js adjourned with Davies two pawns up. This made the fourth game played by Davies to-day. Dunlop v. Davies—Prior to adjournment Davies did not make most of his position. Both players entered tho end of the game with rook, '.knight, and three pawns. Ono of the pawns, however, of Davies, was passed. Intricate play followed, Davies eventually obtaining Dunlop's resignation. Gyles v. Bullock (Kuy Lopez)—Bullock lost a pawn quite early, but later separated king and queen with knight. Gyles pushed on his centro pawns, and Bullock, not finding the right continuation, had to be content with a draw. Moir v. Severne (Ruy Lopez)—This game developed on Bimilar lines to the MoirDunlop game. Moir soon 'worked up a Btrong attack and won. Tho game has been entered for the brilliance prize. Erskine v. Davies (Queen's Pawn Game) —After losing a pawn by an oversight _ in opening, Davies was on the defence. Erskine, with his extra pawn, pressed the game, which went into threo sittings. In tho end? Davies, with' a certain draw, blundered unaccountably and lost. Erskine v. Severne (Queen's Gambit' Declined) —The game was odjourned after 61 moves, with Severne a pawn to the good.
