* —. CJTY ENGINEER'S DEPARTMENT. In the publication containing the reports of the City Council officers for the year, Mr A. R. Galbraith, City Engineer, gives details of the difference in the salaries paid in his department between 1924-25 and 1925-26. In the former year the total was £2389 17s 4d, and in the latter £4532 10s, an increase of £2142 12s Bd. The City Engineer's Department, added Mr Galbraith, is generally looked upon as the great spending department of the Council, and whilst this view is a correct one, it must not be forgotten that it has also a large earning capacity, as the revenue return (excluding rates) for the year under review will show : £ s d Buildings ... 2,176 10 0 Sanitation ... 1,135 It 1 "Waterworks ... 7,116 13 6 Sundries ... 5,675 10 o Total £16,104 8 0
