The small fruit industry is at present engaging a large amount sf labour, strawberry-picking still progressing strongly. Raspberry-growers aro finding a difficulty in seeurin e sufficient labour, and there seems to be competition among the various growers tor securing what labour is available. Many growers are offering lid potpound to pickers, while some are going as high as 2d to some pickers. School children are making quite little fortunes during the holidays. Whooping cough is prevalent in waimate at the present time, and tiiere are not many homes in the district r-i which the distressing sound is not heard! Fortunately the weather is warm, and the little sufferers have ' climatic conditions in their favour for an earlier release from their ailment 1 than would be the case if the attaok • occurred during the winter.
