authority by some boj-3, who apparently did not know how to handle the boat nor were they aware of the currents, for, finding themselves in difficulty near the river's mouth, they jumped out and scrambled to the shore, while the boat drifted out to sea. On Sunday afternoon the boat was discovered washed up on the beach about three miles south of the lagoon, and in a damaged condition. New Year's Eve. Good weather prevailed for New Year's Eve at Temuka, and the town was packed. The usual fireworks were much in evidence, and tradespeople did a thriving trade, the shops being kept open to a late hour, with the assistants going at top pressure to cope with the heaw press of customers. Time-hon-oured customs were taken up by New Year revellers, but there was a complete absence of any acts of hooliganism, the New Year being ushered in in a cordial, happy manner. Presentation. On New Year's Eve Mr L. J. McAteer, postman at Temuka, who has been transferred to Timaru, received a presentation of a fountain-pen from the local post office staff, the postmaster, Mr Baxter, making the presentation. Mr McAteer's position is being filled by Mr C. B. Mangan. Vital Statistics. The vital Rtatistics for Temuka are as follows:—For December, 1926, births 10, deaths 2, marriages i; for last quarter, births 25,- deaths G, marriages 5: for the year, 192G, births 107, deaths 43, marriages 23. Waitobi Sunday School Picnic. The annual Sunday School picnic was held at Waitohi on "the property of Mr Hullam, Eiver Bed road, on New Year's Day. The weather proved ideal for picnicking, and there was a large number of children and friends present. Mr and Miss Maxwell, and Mrs Cone, had worked earnestly to make the outing a success, and we're amply rewarded by the ne turn out. Soon after lunch the races were run, and these were of greater interest and variety than is usual at Sunday School picnic functions. In addition there were nail driving and chain-stepping competitions for the adults. Immediately after tea, the Rev. G. N. Watson presented the prizes tothe children for the past years' work, as follows:—Bible class: Pearl Cone, F. McKinnon, D. McKinnou; 2nd class: B. Gardiner, D. Cinderella Dance. The Cinderella dance held in the Drill Hall on Saturday was '. fitting finale to the Milford Lagoon sports, 100 couples gracing the floor. Mr W. Seeler was M.C, and Simes' orchestra played the dance music. The total takings for the day amounted to £223 las 6d. Flood Damage. It is singularly unfortunate that just at this juncture, when funds have been raised by the Association for protective works to be built at the Milford Lagoon, that the flood waters of the Opihi should have set up an erosion of the •ank at the road washing away practically the whole of the road. Just prior to the New Year's picnic the road was widened through the gift of a strip of land, but on the morning of the sports, the Opihi came down in flood, and scoured out the willows planted for protection and several yards of the road were washed away. Yesterday through rain in the back country, the river was again in high flood and more extensive damage was done, practically the whole of the road being washed away. Gangs of men were working all day making prote=*«» w™ Xe trees and planks for the bank, and their efforts met with a certain amount of success.

GERALDINE. The Geraldine streets were fairly thronged on New Year's Eve, when the Geraldine Municipal Band and the Timaru TV> Band both turned out, their music beirm creatly appreciated. Early on faatuiSav•morning the sun was shining brfily?but later on clouds came up, Ed after ono o'clock a thunderstorm c a ommenced: followed in a few bv rain which soon became torrential. An inch and eight points were regis4red fn an hour and* a half, and some of the creeks became so swollen that motor-cars were held up, but the ram then lulled though the weather was still threatening. , Mr B R- Macdonald, of Waitui, on the Downs, registered 381 inches of rain for December; the heaviest fall during the month being 1.27 inches on the 24th During December of 1925 the rainfall was 1.70 inches.
