TIMARU.
SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Dr and Mrs G. H. Kingston (Grey road) have returned from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs C. Bryan King (Sealey street) have returned from Wellington. Mrs J. E. Loughnan (Fairlie) is the guest of Mrs Westmacott .(Nile street). Miss Meg Loughnan is with Mrs J. P. Newman (Moana). Mrs P. Pitcaithly (Lyttelton) is spending a holiday in Timaru. Mr and Mrs Gilbert Hayhurst (Oamaru), who have been spending a fortnight in Timaru, left yesterday with Mr, Mrs, and Miss Ardagh (Glenavy), on a motor trip to Mount Cook, and will return via Cromwell. Mr, Mrs, and Mr J. McKelvie, and Mrs Bums, 'Wellington, are visiting Timaru. Police Court. At the Timaru Police Court yesterday morning, before Messrs D. McLennan and A. Lawrence Gee, Patrick Doran, alias John Doran, was charged with being a rogue and vagabond, within the meaning of the Police Offences* Act, inasmuch as he had no visible lawful means of support. The accused pleaded guilty, and he was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, during which he will be medically examined.
TEMUKA. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs Cecil Wareing (Wellington) and Mr W. McClintock (Auckland) are the guests of Mrs A. McClintock (Temuka). Mr W. G. Marshall, of the Temuka railway staff, has gone ou his annual leave, being relieved by Mr E. 0. Bretner, of Dunedin. Mr G. L. Dennistoun, the Belgian Consul, Wellington, who has been the guest of Mr and Mrs G. W. Armitage. Temuka, leaves for the north to-day. Mr and Mrs A. W. Buzan have gone to Oamaru for a, holiday.
Miss E. Stevenson, of New Brighton, is the guest of Miss Carter, Milford. Mrs K. Edmonds is visiting Mrs J. Leonard, Epworth, Temuka. Mrs D. N. and Miss N. Clarke (Gammack street, Temuka) are visiting friends at Fairlie.
Mr A. J. Bannister, of the Temuka Post Office, has gone on a holiday to Nelson.
Mr G. Harvey (a Temuka boy) has been transferred from the Waimate exchange to a position in the Temuka exchange. Miss M. Williams (Auckland) and Misses E. Bartlett and E. Ball (Christchurch) are at present spending their vacation with Captain and Mrs Bartlett, King street, Temuka. Brigadier Hopper, of the Salvation Army, London, who came out to New Zealand with an emigrant party on the s.s. Mataroa on December 13th, has been on a visit to the Bramwell Booth Boys' Home, and with Staff Captain Holmes was at the Milford Lagoon sports on New Year's Day.
Temuka Municipal Band. Inclement weather prevented the band from playing carols on Christmas Eve as arranged, but on New Year's morning the band turned out with a good muster under Messrs S. Cross, J. Allfrey, and G. H. Clements. At midnight they commenced at Mr T. Gunnion's corner, and were conveyed to different localities in Councillor A. W. Buzan's motor-lorry. At the residence of the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs G. B. Cartwright) the bandsmen were entertained, and, in proposing the toast of their host and hostess, a tribute was paid to the Mayor for the keen interest he had taken in the band's affairs and for the valuable assistance he had given them on so many occasions. Mr Cartwright, in replying, expressed the pleasure he had been given by hearing the fine music played by the band, and wished the bandsmen a very happy and progressive New Year. At the conclusion of the programme, Councillor Buzan was hea.-tily thanked for tho use of his motor-lorry. The collection amounted to £ll ss, and on every hand satisfaction was expressed at tho great improvement made by the band under the now conductor. Mr B. Cumming.
Motor Accident On Saturday, afternoon Mr Stephen Costello/of Geraldine, while driving a Ford car on the main highway, crashed into a telegraph pole at Seadown. The car was badly damaged, and Mr Costello was picked up by a passing motorist and conveyed to Geraldine. Bowling. On New Year's Day visitors from Ashburton who came down with the Post and Telegraph employees' picnic, were hospitably entertained to a game of bowls on the local green. A progressive pairs competition was played, the winners being found in G. Pierce (skip) and J. Dougherty (Ashburton) (lead). Boat Drifts to Sea.
