In the match betweon Angas and Martin, the former was not on* his game. The first sot was won by Angas, 7-5. Martin had won the set at 5-4 advantage in, but a wrong decision lost it for him. The next set was won by Martin, 6-4, and in the last Bet Angas found his game, and won 6-1. Playing Johnston, Angas was right on his gamo, and had no difficulty in beating him by 7-5, 3-6, 0-1. Johnston was making many mistakes, and netting the ball on easy shots. Angas beat Walker very easily in tho first set of the semi-final, Walker netting the ball a great deal. In tho next set Walker improved, but Angas managed to pull the set out of the fire, winding on Walker s mistakes for the mOBt part. , Ollivier beat Robinson 6-1, 6-3 in the third round, showing his best form for some years past, and driving with beautiful length, while his volleying was very fine. Robinson, the New Zealand university singlos champion, opened up very nervously, making several double faults, and failing to find his length. Ollivier was on his game, immediately winning the first set 6-1. In the next set Rob•inson opened strongly, and with beautiful cross-court drives-led Ollivier 6-2. Ollivier then showed great'form, and returned Robinson's drives, finishing off with some beauti-fully-placed volleys. He won the set 6-4. Page showed greatly improvod form against Gawno, formerly of Wellington and Hastings, his placing being perfect. Boddy showed his best form, but Page was too accurate, and won out 6-4 in the first set. In the second set Page opened out well, and was leading 5-0 and 40-15. Hero Boddy pulled up, and by steady play and high lobbing ran Page to 9-7. High lobbing and dirty balls caused Page some difficulty in pulling the set through. H, W. Ogier, of Christchurch, who had been playing very steadily through the first four rounds, met S. O. McDougall, Dunedin, and surprised all by beating him G-4, 3-6, 6-1. Ogier has a very fine forehand drive. He tackled McDougall's back-hand by consistently playing to it, and forced him into errors. McDougall was not playing his usual steady game, and was unable to cope with the pace of Ogier's forehand drives. He tired in the last set. Ogier's win was one of the surprises of the tournament, and he should go a long way.
Miss Finch, of Dunedin, caused some surprise by beating Miss Sowden, university combined champion of New Zealand. Miss iPinch was very eteady, and Miss Sowden waß not at home on the hard court.
Miss Ward, Christchurch, who won tlie Mid-€anterbury championship at Christmas, had no difficulty in beating Miss King 9-2. Miss Thwaitea (Christchurch) beat Miss D. Manchester (Waimate) 9-5 by great forehand driving, which proved t to» severe for hei opponent. MiBS Wilson played very steadily against Mibb D. Manchester, winning 9-7. She also played a very fine game against Miss GibBon, winning by good all-round play. This game was another surprise packet. To-day she should put up a splendid fight in the final. . , Hammond and Cramond beat Ollivier and Eußßell 6-4, 6-2. The two former combined splendidly. Ollivier was making remarkable recoveries, but was badly supported by Kussell, who could not combat the force of his opponents. The finest double match of the day was between Page and Walker, who beat Taylor and McDougall 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. In the opening set McDougall and Taylor opened very atrongly, Taylor showing terrific service and cross-court smashes, while his backhand return of service was very fine. In the next set Page and Walker found their game, and by deep lobbing to the centre of the court, and hard drives, changed the aspect of the game, winning the second set 6-3. In the next set Page and Walker showed experience in placements, which upset the opposition's combination, while Taylor showed signs of tiring. Taylor made some very fine backhand driving, which gave Waiaer opportunities of smashing close to the net. In the fourth round Page and Walker beat Spragge and Ogier, their experience proving too much for their younger opponents Misses KicolJ and Finch played very finely, having no difficulty in beating Mesdames Morrow and Bannerman, 9-5, by steady play, Misses G. and D. Manchester (Waimate), after a hard game, were beaten by Mis=es Lillico and Cossins, 9-8. Misses Barse and Thwaitea beat Misses Kin? and Barton by accurate driving, ana in the fourth round they had no difficulty
in boating Misses Poultney and Oldfield,
In the mixed doubles, there was only one brilliant game, this being between Page and Miss Sowden and Boddy and Miss D. Manchester. This was a great combination, and all four players played brilliantly. Boddy and Miss Manchester played surprisingly good tennis, but the experience of their opponents proved too much in the end. Boddy's smashing and volleying was very brilliant, while Miss Manchester made some remarkable recoveries from the bark of the court. Miss Sowden was verv fine at tha net. She served splendidly. Page's playing was very accurate, and in critical moments his placing of angle shots was too much for his oppo*-»-ts.
