NOTES ON THE RACING. (BPZCIU. TO THE PRESS.) INVEUCARGILL, January 3. The Southland Racing Club opened its Bummer Meeting in beautiful sunshine, and before a record crowd, £1309 8s 6d being taken at the gates, as compared with £1194 9i 6d on tha same day last year. The , coarse was in excellent order, and the rac- \ lag throughout .the afternoon was the best } everVeeii on the course. / ( jjgfpuna, Guncase, Adjutor, and Kalkahu .L-ajMf .very even)y backed in that order in ' fie.Avenal Hurdles, and the first-named led all the way. At the home turn Coastguard and Kaikabn went up to Kapuna, and Coastguard jumped'the last hurdle on terms with him, but in tha run home Kapuna won by a length and a half. Soldior's Pride broke down in the race. The time, 2.46 1-5, soowod the track was in good order, despite the heavy rain on Saturday night. Desert Star, who was giving away sixty yards, and had to go round a field of seventeen, was made favourite in the Makarewa Saddle Trot, and,' finishing very fast over the last three fuclongs, beat' Baker Boy by a couple of lengths. He is another member ol A, McLennan'e team, which is. very strong just now. Sunstorm had every chance, but failed to stay over the last two furlongs. Wallace Mac looked like winning at the home turn, but he, too, failed to stay on. Baker Boy, who is owned by Mr R. Jstnleson, of Winton, tho father of trotting in Southland, is a rapidly-improving young one. The times of tho placed horses were 8.84 4-5, 3.39 1-5, 3.37 4-5. Baldowa was made a good favourite in the Jlytttg Handicap, and was actually first to talk tha" line, but gave way in a few strides, and was never dangerous after Mid*. Receipt and Bright Mark were qtlckiy out in front, and thoy led into the , straight. Receipt stayed on well, and beat Booster and Comic Song, who fought out a -"trait finish', by a length and a half. LoughJU'Jniahed on well in fifth place, and is nidenily coming back to form. Jnck o" 'Y ttiiern gave another unruly display at the > lamer, and the field eventually started within j*hun. Cassolette, who was well up at ♦••home turn, broke down in the straight. -..-. Respite the fact that Sparkling Eyes was frying nearly two stone of lead, and L. BIB*) who did not handle her well at Wjydham on Saturday, sho was sent out a M>ifMourlte in the New Year Handicap, •ad though she drew tho rails, Spean Bridge Started from the coveted position, and but Jet dropping back from second place three iwloats from home, might have won, instead of being second. Battle Colours, who Up. ]»t his party down several times," was *lw*ji well up, and, faking charge at the •bp-ot the straight won nicely from Spean Bridie. Top Gear, who waa a good second favourite, was never dangerous. Tha Invercargill Cup provided one of the ■hit contests ever seen for the event, and the finilh between Bet Sail, Circulation, and SiMnni, the three top weights, was. close. Dlimantle made the pace from the barrier *l»a,' and with five furlongs to go was sailing •long ilx lengths in front of Set Sail, with Ooanteniga, Circulation, and Pink Terrace lying handy. With about three furlongs to *o. Sot Sail and Countersign had Collared DiuMntle, and Set Sail, who was nearly an •Ten-money chance, led Circulation and Countersign into the straight, with Pink Terrace, Genalai, and Ravenna all close up. At_the diitaaee post Circulation challenged Set Sail, and the pair left tho rails and finished close to the judge's box. Set Sail, most vigor•ualy ridden by Emerson, gained the judge s Terdiet by a nose. Ravenna, who had a eI»M mn on the rails, looked dangerous halfway from the distance post, but just failed to get np by a neck. Countersign was » foople of lengths away fourth, with Pink Temee and Vaward next, while Dismantle Mi lait. Yet another of A. McLellan's team was [•letted as favourite in the Oreti Trot, Cameo Being a few pounds better backed than Nelion McElwyn. this pair carrying many more Investments than Cardinal and Blue and Ohhner, who were the next best fancied. NOTES ON THE RACING. (SPECIAI, TO TH« PBESS.) GREYMOUTH, January 3. The Westland Trotting Club held its Annual Meeting to-day in hot and sultry weather. There was. a fair attendance, visitors being much in evidence from Greymouth and Reef ton. Although the course was heavy at the start, it improved as the day wore on, bnt even so it was far from its best. The racing was interesting and several of the finishes were close. AH started in the District Handicap, and Charlie Lincoln, an aged gelding by Charlie McKinney from Elsie Lincoln, owned and trained by J. R. Simpson, of Karamea, followed up his success at Westport by winning comfortably from Val Logan, who was always well placed, but did not finish so strongly as the winner. The favourite, IlUnora, raced a long way below expectations. He mixed his gait repea edly, and was easily beaten into third place, with Prince Mac a moderate fourth. At the end at the circuit Harina was up with the headers, but tired badly and with Cyclops, Te Karere, and Merry Logan finished in the "a 'large field of ton started in the Kanieri Handicap, and. three and trained horses in Lochree. from N. O. rnce s stable. Bonilene. driven by her opined OrorfeV, and Sylvie Logan, owned and trained hv T H. McKenzie, monopolised the beting and were first, second, and third fari frl'tos respectively. Lochree began well, and ■Hs;«.aX/'sr:%s Vv vie Loean scored nicely from iair Dil Sylvie «°s»" Bonilene. the field, went on to win with something in hand from Satin Princess, and gave her owner-trainer, J. R. Simpson, his second win on the day. Satin Princess paced a much better race than at Westport, and easily beat all but the winner. Amy Audubon showed as much speed as anything else, but tired over the last half mile, and was beaten into third place. Greateaux and Springtime both gave moderate displays. . The latter was in charge at the end of a circuit, and led for the next six fnrlong-s, but tired and finished in the ruck. Peter Nash broke at the start, while Ynys Joy and Dahlia Dillon both failed to stay, and judging by their displays, and are not partial to a journey. The Stafford Hindicap was ,i poor race, and practically a contest between Bonllene and Turi, and in that order they finished. Turi led until three furlongs from home, when Bonilene put in her claim nad won nicely. The winner is an aged mare by Great Audubon from Franialena. At present she is only a moderate, and will require to improve before she wins another stake.' Turi had every chance, hut was well beaten. Prince Mac was a poor third, and Te Karere fourth. Arran Lad was turned the opposite way round at the start, while the efforts of Tiny Huon and Kelburn were very disappointing. A mixed field of eight unhoppled trotters contested the Dominion Trotters' Handicap, and after leading throughout Royal Review, an aged gelding by Quincey from Miss Havelock, scored a popular win from Great Amazon, Connie Dillon, and Comfort. Tha winner trotted much more solidly than his opponents, and the mistakes of Great Amazon and Connie Audubon made hid task much easier. The efforts of Nellie Hugo, Comfort, and Bon Elect call for little comment, as they broke repeatedly, and finished a furlong behind the placed horses.
The scratching pen was used freely in the Aviation Handicap, and out of fifteen acceptors only nine went to the post. Pavlova carried 150 tickets more than Sedmere, who was next in demand, with Ocean Whispers and Ynys Joy the best backed of the others. There was a lot of bad driving and interference. After being amongst the leaders throughout, Pavlova put in her claim at the entrance to the straight, and won comfortably, and gave A. Bryce his first win on the circuit. Audrey Dillon defeated Sylvie Logan for second money, but she was' somewhat lucky as, with a good passage, the latter would certainly have finished closer up than third. Outside the placed horses Ynys Joy made the best showing, and finished fourth. Lochree made amends for his defeat in the Kanieri Handicap by winning the Final Handicap from nine others. The New Brighton-trained gelding began in great style, and making the pace solid, scored in 2.23, or 4sec better than his handicap. Peter Elect paced a solid race into second place, and was unlucky in meeting such a good young horse as the winner. Turi finished third, twelve lengths behind Peter Elect, with Velocity at the head of a strung-out field.
