(SPECIAL TO THE TSXSS.) GREYMOUTH, January 3. Mr and Mrs Earl Keid (Blenheim), who have been spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs H. Gilmer (fiaupo) returned by car to Blenheim this morning. Miss Madge Wilson, Christehurch, is the guest of Miss Vera Parkinson, Greymouth. Mr R. Stewart, of the Xational Bank of New Zealand, Christehurch, and Mrs Stewart, are spending a holiday on the "West Coast. Mr L. Vickejy, who has been visiting his daughter, Mrs Ivan Bennington, returned to-day to Lecston. Miss M. Eansou, who has been visiting friends in Greymouth, returned today to Wellington. Miss M. McCubbin, Wellington, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs W. McCubbin, Westport. Mr and Mrs Flcsher, of Christehurch, accompanied by their son and Mr Page, left Westport this morning, for the Franz Josef Glacier. The Weather. The morning broko dull but line. As the day wore on the weather improved, and there was brilliant sunshine. This afternoon the prospects of ideal weather for the remaining days of the Kaeiug Carnival were very encouraging. Dobson Drowning Tragedy. The body of John Gibbs, wiio was drowned while bathing at Dobson last Wednesday afternoon, was recovered near the Tip Head this afternoon, by a man named Glen. Au inquest will be held at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. Railway Employee Injured. Joseph Meade, a blacksmith employed at tho Greymouth Railway workshops, on Friday last, suffered severe injuries to his left hand, necessitating the insertion of six stitches. Reefton Burglaries. Several cases of breaking into and ransacking private houses occurred at Reefton during the holidays; In one instance the movements of a woman and child, who were discovered on private property on the Bullerroad aroused suspicion, but on a chaso being given the trespassers managed to make their escape without being identified. Injured Jockey. In response to an enquiry from tho Grey River ■ Hospital this evening, it was ascertained that thero is no change in the condition of G. Holley, the jockey who was seriously injured at the Omoto racecourse on JXcw Year's Day. Eeefton Weather Statistics. The Reefton School of Mines records for December, 1926, show a total of 4.1 inches on seven days with rain, the maximum being on December 13th with 2.5 inches. Very good weather has been experienced generally throughout the month, with several hot and sultry days during the past fortnight. The total rainfall for-the year amounted to 83.59 a inches, with rain en 129 days.
LIFE-SAVING DAY. SURF COMPETITIONS. NEW BRIGHTON TEAMS WIN. Life-Savinjr Day was held at North Beach yesterday, and competitions for the Ray Blank Cup, the Benson Cup, and the Sumner Cup wero conducted. Formerly the competitions were held on separate days, but it was not possible to arouse as much interest J a life-saving as-was thought necessary. A special day has now been instituted for the combined events. Considerable interest was taken in the competitions yesterday. .' - The officials were:—Judges: Messrs F. L. Collins, W. H.
