MARRIED WOMEN.

MUST RESIGN. APPOINTMENTS. (TBOlf OUB OWIT COHBEBroHDENT.) LONDON, November 16. Lady Berry, speaking at a meeting of the Six Point Group, drew attention to the London County Council Standing Order which compels women teachers to resign their appointments on marriage. "The application of this order has been so sweeping that it has been extended to apply even to the London. County Council charwomen," said Lady Berry. "In consequence women who were adding to the incomes of their menfolk and helping to keep their homes together were thrown out of employment." Lady Berry traced the present regulations to the post-war agitation regarding the employment of women, and said that it was iniquitous that a highly-skilled and efficient woman teacher, who may have spent a great deal of money on training herself for the profession, should have to retire simply because she wished to get married. "Another side of this question," she added, "is that in an increasing number of cases women faced with the necessity of sacrificing their hard-won independence on getting married are disregarding the legal and religious side of this ceremony."
