MORE POWER.
EARLY OPERATION OF NEW UNIT.. Early in the New Year the plant at Lake Coleridge will be working at full capacity for the first time since it was erected. At present the new tunnel is being repaired, but it is expected that this work will be completed within the next, few days, when the intake gate of the tunnel will be opened again. The new number eight unit will then be put on full load, making a supply of 27,000 kilowatts available for use. First of all, however, the unit will have to pass a test, but it is not expected that this will result in any hitch taking place in the arrangements for the supply of the full load. Owing to the repairing of the new tunnel, the Public Works Department has recently had to call on the Tramway Board's reserve plant for the power, the last occasion being on Friday evening last, but as soon as the new unit is in operation the Department expects to be independent of the Board's plant except in the event of circumstances not at present in sight. An important extension of the supply of Lake Coleridge power was made on December 23rd, when delivery was made to the Waitaki Power station at Weston, near Oamaru. Beyond this point the North Otago Power Board operates, its source of supply being Waipori.
