MOUNTAIN CLIMBER HURT.
. ' 4 STRUCK BY LOOSE BOULDER. High up 011 the mountain slopes near the Harman Pass a painful accident occurred on Thursday morning, when Roger Chester, a Papanui youth, had a large piece of Seen torn from the calf of his leg by a bouldor weighing about a ton slipping down the mountainside.
Chester, accompanied by Ivan Tucker, another Papanui youth of 20, left Papanui on Christmas Dav with the intention of climbing to the summit of Mount Rolleston, but, on finding it covered with a thick mist, set out for the Harman Pass. While going up the Taiporiti riverbed, about 3000 feet above sea level, young Chester ..started a shingle slide, causing a large boulder to roll down. It was this boulder which crushed his leg. First aid was rendered by one of the party, and then a slow journey of 20 miles back to the main road was commenced, the injured youth having to be carried across 5 swollen streams. On reaching the main road, they were fortunate to meet a motorist, who conveyed thera to Arthur's Pass, where Chester's injuries received attention from Dr. Mi(ligan, of the Christchurch Hospital, who is there with the W.E.A. Summer School. Chester, although confined to bed, is making a good recovery.
