AVON CLUB SUCCESSFUL. The Avon Rowing CluO's representatives put up a capital performance, securing no fewer thau four firsts, nine seconds, and two thirds, scoring » total of 41) points in 1 hr- U.C.L. Cup competition. The next best showing v.-as nn"lc by the Union Club, whose total of 31 [joints was made up of six firsts, one second, and a third. The Canterbury Club scored 13 points—two firste, a second, and two thirds. Akaroa. got a second and twg thirds (5 points), and Sum-uer-Rcdclilfs one point—a third.

Avon got the better start, Union pressing them closely. It was a ding-dong race for the first quarter of a mile, Avon having a slight advantage. Union wero not going well together. Getting away well together, Avon took the lead, tho other three crews being unable to make any impression on them. Akaroa found the pace too hot, and retired aftor passing the wharf. Avon were leading at the wharf, and, maintaining their advantage, Won by barely a third o£ a longth, Canterbury not being in the picture. Time, 6min 36scc. Before the race had been in progress long Avon No. 2 and Akaroa, were some lengths behind. On drawing level with tho wharf, however, Akaroa had gained a, lot on Avon No. 1, while Avon No. 2 were several lengths behind. About 100 yards from home Avon No. 1, seeing that Union could not lose, eased up, the winners crossing the line six lengths ahead. Canterbury were third, a long way behind. Time, 7min lsec. Canterbury leapt to the from the start, the other three crews being left together. Rowing a splendid stroke, Canterbury were greatly in the lead at the wharf, and won easily by over three lengths, a lei:glh separating the second and third crews.
