CROQUET.
* CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. PLAY ENDED SATURDAY. Play in the Canterbury Croquet Association's Christmas Competitions ended at the United Club's courts on Saturday. - Games were also played on Friday. Light was favourable for good croquet on both days, and tho general standard of play was good. On Saturday evening the prizes were distributed after the play at the green. * Results were a* follows: — LADIES' CLUB PAIRS. Final—Mesdames E. A. Smith and Tyers beat Mesdames Beanland and Hadfield, 26-10. CANTERBURY HANDICAP. Second semi-final—Mrs E. A. Johnson beat A. G. F. Rosa, 26-22. Play in this game was interesting, but Mr 3 Johnson managed to keep tho lead by accurate shots. Final—T. F. Chambers beat Mrs E. A. Johnson, 26-22. Much interest was taken in this final. Mrs Johnson played some brilliant strokes but Chambers «u just a, little better in his judgmeunt. CANTERBURY LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP. FIRST DRAW. Second round—Mrs Beanland beat Miss Oxley, 26-23. Semi-finals—Mrs E. A. Smith beat Mrs Beanland, 26-20; Mrs E. A. Johnson beat Mrs Tyers, 26-16. Final—Mrs E. A. Smith beat Mrs E. A. Johnson. SECOND DRAW. First semi-final—Mrs E. A. Smith beat Mrs Beanland, 26-18. In this game Mr 3 Smith played exceptionally well and easily defeated her opponent who, for tho most part, was put on the defensive. Second semi-final—Mrs Leech beat Mrs E. A. Johnson, 26-23. This was one of the most exciting games of the day. Both ladies showed some clever croquet, but in tho end Mrs Leech was the fortunate one. Final—Mrs E. A. Smith beat Mrs Leech, 26-23. Mrs Smith's play throughout the tournament was brilliant. CONSOLATION HANDICAP. First round—G. H. Savile beat Mrs Dixon, 26-13; Mrs Tyers beat Mrs Glackin, 11-9; Mrs H. Smith beat Mrs Hindmarsh, 21-17; E. J. Ross beat E. A. Johnson, 26-22; Mrs. McClurgh beat Mrs Brennan, 26-19; Mrs Legg beat Miss Gerard, 23-18; Mrs Midgley beat Miss Harris, 14-13. Second round—Mrs Corbet beat Mrs Keetley, 24-18; Mrs Childs beat Mrs Cowper, 16-13; G. H. Savile beat Mrs Tyers, 19-10; E. J. Ross beat Mrs H. Smith, 26-23; Mrs McClurgh beat Mrs Legg, 26-8; Mrs Midgley beat Mrs Grant, 20-12; Mrs Manhire beat Mrs Cowper, 18-16; Mrs Osborne beat Mrs Renaldi by default. Third round—Mrs Corbett beat Mrs Childs. 21-11; G. H. Savile beat E. J. Ross, 26-5; Mrs Manhire beat Mrs Osborne 26-14; Mrs McClurgh beat Mrs Midgley, 23-17. ° Semi-finals—G. H. Savile beat Mrs Corbett, 26-13; Mrs McClurgh beat Mrs Manhire, 20-19. Final—Mrs McClurgh beat Savile, 26-17. Play was interesting but not very fast. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. ■ Second semi-final—T. F. Chambers beat Mrs Maddren, 2-1. Final A. G. F. Ross beat Chambers, 2-1.
