NOTES ON THE RACING (special to the press.)
There were nineteen starters in the Tamaki Handicap for untioppled trotters, but as was the case with the first race on the previous day, it provided a very poor exhibition of trotting, more than half the competitors making mistakes at various stages. Katute, who was second favourite, broke badly just after the start, while Elzear did not begin at all well. Tamerlane, who was a good favourite, went away well, and with a round to go was showing the way to Molly Audubon, Elzear, Heta Huon, and Marble Star. Going along the back, Marble Star raced up alongside Tamerlane, and they came into the straight together. Tamerlane stayed on the better of the pair and Marble Star broke under pressure, with a result that Elzear got up in time to dead-heat for second place. Molly Audubon was three lengths away fourth and then came Eeta Huon and Sea Queen. The winner, who is an aged gelding by Petereta from Miss Hugo, is quite a useful trotter, and his performance in winning at Ashburton on Monday and at Auckland to-day was rathor exceptional. In a big field of twenty-three for the Park Handicap, Asians was sent out favourite, but though ho ran a good race, he had too much ground to make up in the run home and was beaten into third place. Haydock left the mark better than she had done in her previous Taces, and half a mile from ' home looked a winner, but Bock Hinton, finishing fast, got up in time to beat her by half a -length. Shadowland lan a fair race in fourth place, and after him came Goldfinch and Marshal Neil, the last-named having lost a good deal of ground through breaking. The President's Handicap was marked by a notable performance on the part of Great 1 Bingen, who, though beaten into third | ):lace, registered a world's gross track record by doing 4.19 2-5. The race was full of interest throughout. Peterwah showed up in the first round, but lost his chance by breaking, and with a lap to go, Queen's Own was in front followed by Locanda Mac, Kohara, and Imprint. Going along the back, Queen's Own' drew clear and she led into the straight, but in the final stages Kohara had her measure and beat her by half a length. Great Bingen's finishing effort was a thrilling one, but he was unab'e to get through in time. Talaro raced with his usual consistency and was again in the money. Imprint has lost form at present. Jack Potts, who finished fifth, showed a lot of pace but did not go kindly all the way. Tiger Slave and Sebisca were scratched for the New Year Handicap, and Heal the Great, Elzear, and Trampfast were backed in that order. Real the Great was slow to begin, and Elzear, after leaving the mark, broke and refused to settle down until her chance was gone. • Trampfast also refused to strike his gait until all the field had gone past him, and his effort in gaining third place wa3 decidedly impressive. Nelson McKinney went well for the greater part of the journey, but as on the previous day lost his chance by breaking. The Tartar and Wimmera King were together entering the straight, and in a great race home, The Tartar won by half a head. Real the Great was fourth, To'l Chimes fifth, and Vi'ild Nut sixth.
Jewel Pointer and Auto Machine were withdrawn from the Telegraph Handicap, and in & good betting nice Machine Gun, Kotuku Jack, Marshal Neil, and Nimble Direct were the best backed. Machine Gnn did well to finish fourth, but there were too many horfle3 in frontof him,-while Kotuku Jack gave a poor display. Marihal Neil was well placed half a 'mile from home and, finishing strongly, he beat Nimble Direct, who would probably have won but for being blocked at a critical stage. Some smart milerß were engaged in the Onslow Handicap, from which Jack Potts was withdrawn. The lace was robbed of some of its interest by the failure of Bonny Logan and Acron to leave the mark properly, the latter being hopelessly out of it. All Bell and Glandore cut out the early running, but two furlongs from home, ;\clson Fame streaked away and won very easily Ne-son Derby finished well, but had no chance with the winner. Nelson Fame and jNelson Derby ;iro brothers, both being by Nelson Bingen from Notice.
The Association Handicap was looked forward to with considenib'e interest, as it brought about another meeting between Waikaha, Escapade, and Napland. The lastnamed, bracketed with Pete Peter, was n very warm favouriio, with Waikaha next in demand. AVaikaha broke at the start aiid again before they had gono a couple of furlongs, and A 1 Mack quickly established a big lead. He was etill in front six furlongs from homo, but Escapade, Waikaha, and Pete Peter were closo behind him, whilo Napland, who had lost ground by breaking, was a long way back. Escapade had taken charge as they tnrned for home and won decisively from Waikaha. Napland made up a lot of ground, but the effort was too much for him. It was a fine performance on
Escapade's part, and her form at the Meeting shows that the high opinions held of her are quite justified. The bracketed pair, Holly Boy and Don Douglas, were best backed for the Premier Handicap, but neither was in the money. Nelson Tasker, Lord Nepean, and Jewel Pointer were the leaders all the' way, and ill a great finish, Lord Nepean won by ft nose from Jowel Pointer, with Nelson Tasker a length and a half away, Goldman being fourth and Lndy Duirmore fifth. Goldman was putting in tome great work over the final stages, but could not get clear in time.
