NOTES ON THE RACING, (SPECIAL TO THS PRESS.)
The Southland Now Year racing carnival opened at Wyndham to-day In very warm weather, and before a record attendance, JEIOG6 being taken at the .gates as compared with £BB4 last year. The track was in excellent order, though a little on the hard side. The totalisator investments, £21,966, show an increase of £2138 10s on last year'B turnover.
Rrtdiac was always well placed in the New Year Hurdles, and over half a mile from home Wormald took him to the front and led Kapuna and Kaikahu into the straight, the others being beaten off. Radiac, who was a hot favourite, had to be shaken up over the last half-furlong to beat Kapuna by half a length, while Kaikahu was only a length further back. Markby broke a leg, and had to be destroyed. Only Credit and Sparkling Eyes were backed in the Trial Plate Handicap. From a straggling start Top Gear and Credit were the smartest to begin. The latter quickly took np the running, and led to within fifty yards of the post, where he stopped, and Top Gear won by three-parts of a length from Sparkling Eyes, who just beat Credit by a head for second money. Sparkling Eyes did not get away well, went round her field at the home turn, and finished wide out. With a little better luck in the running she would have won. Cameo was selected as a good thing for the Victory Harness Trot, but never looked like a winner. 'Robert Bell, who was penalised 12 yards for winning at Winton on Thursday, was in front at the end of six furlongs, and looked like winning, but Roving Don came with a great burst of speed from the turn, and, cutting down the leaders in rare style, beat Robert Bell by nearly three lengths. He was an inmate of McLellan's stable for a season or two, but is now trained by his owner. The favourite finished badly.
The scratching of Circulation, Countersign, Miss Winkie, Bilbo, Roman Archer, and Guncase left a good field of nine in the Wyndham Cup, the best the club has ever had. The betting was good, £4090 being invested. Vaward, who had Emerson in the
saddle* made a better favourite than Overdrawn and Dismantle, these three being much better backed than Pink Terrace, who loked well, while Cupidon was the extreme outsider of the party. Dismantle at once took charge, but never got far away Geranial and Vaward, and the latter headed her for half a furlong after passing the five furlong post. Dismantle led Geranial, Vaward, and Pink Terrace round the far turn, but at the entrance to the straight had disappeared, and the order into the home turn was Pink Terrace, Geranial, Vaward, Overdrawn, Full Swing, and Dismantle, the others being close up. Pink Terrace held her own in the run home, and won nicely by a length from Cupidon, who came very fast from the turn, and beat award by half a length for second money. Ho had been doing well lately on the Invercargill tracks, and his party was prepared to sec him run well. Dismantle stopped badly after going a mil©. Hosedoy ran well on the hard course, and pulled up sound. Black Duke, in receipt of a 51b allowance, wag made a hot favourite in the Mimihau Hack Handicap, and, getting a lucky opening approaching the turn, shoi through and ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Cassolette and Soldier's Hope, who for second money. Cassolette led for fivo furlongs, and is quickly coming back to form. Baldowa, who was credited with running hlaf a mile on the Invercargill track in 47sec on Friday, was sent out an odds chance in the President's Handicap, with Lava also hoavily backed. Franeaise and Jack o' Lantern dolayed the start for nearly twenty minutes by playing up. When the borrier rose Bright Mark was first out, and led Bugle Note, Eaton Bells, and Lava along the back. Eaton Bells followed Bright Mark into the straight, where Bugle Note, Miss Winkie, and Baldowa were all up. Bugle Note challenged Bright Mark inside the distance, and in a great finish stayed on to win by half a length. Th- 1 placed Baldowa second, Miss Winkie third, and Eaton Bolls fourth, but it looked as > if Miss Winkle was Becond, Eaton Bells third, nnd the favourite fourth. The winner went down verv scratchily in his preliminary. Jock'a Pal, out of McLellan's stable, was backed in the Digger's Saddle Trot as if the race were all over, but he was badly beaten into fourth place by Queen Betty, Wallace Mac, and Sunstorm over the_ last half-mile. Sunstorm went away very quickly, and looked like a winner until the entrance to the straight, where Wallace Mac and Queen Betty ran up to him. Wallace Mac ran a little wide, and in a splendid finish Queen Betty beat him home. After her good showing at the Dunedin Meeting, Wingatui was selected as a good thing for the Visitors' Hack Race, and she very nearly won. »She and Blue Dragoon were out in front all the way, and, contesting every inch of the journey with game* ness, she was beaten only by a nose. Blue Dragoon, who was purchased by Mr .T. Hammerle,v o few weeks ago for £'lo, bus quickly proved himself a very cheap horse. The pair finished a dozen lengths in front of Obligio, and her form makes Wingatui look a likely winner again next week.

It has beer, decided not to run Lvsander again at Wlerelie, and lie was withdrawn from the Royal Stakes after his race in the Derby on Saturday, Ihc Thorn, who has not done weTl in Auck'aud, was not produced after the second day. Originally it was intended to keep the Absurd —Cherry Mart gelding, Covent Garden, for the Wellington Meeting, but he is to race in the Sylvia Handicap to-day, in winch, moreover, he looks like being very hard to beat. So far Lysander has been Mr Currie's only winner at Ellerslie.
