RIVER TRUST.
RATEPAYERS' tiUALIFICATINOS. Last year considerable misapprehension existed regarding the voting in respect of the Waimakariri River Trust's proposals. Lest there should bo any doubt, concerning the voting at the election to be held on January 11th nest, the returning officer (Mr C. W. Hervey) stated yesterday that the office of the Trust would be open daiiy on week-days except to-day, to-morrow, and Monday, for the purposo of giving any information that ratepayers might require. He pointed out that in the wise of a property being in joint names the ratepayer whose name was first mentioned would .be entitled to vote. Where a person on making application for a voting paper is informed by the returning officer that his name does not appear on the roll, such person may vote on making a declaration that ho was entitled by virtuo of a proper qualification to have his name on the roll and that he had reasonable cause to believe that his name was entered on the roll.
Every person -who votes under the authority of this section shall enclose his voting.papers in an envelope, which shall be sealed by him in the presence of the deputy returning officer. The envelope and declaration shall bo numbered by the deputy returning officer, and the voting papers shall thon be deposited in the ballot-box by the voter.
Every person who Knowingly and wilfully makes a false statement or declaration shall be liable to a fino of £SO. Mr Henvey also .stated that the voting would be allowed on the following basis:—One vote oh a valuation up to £1000; two rotes from £IOO3 to £2000: three votes (the maximum) from £2OOI.
