PROVISIONS FOR NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS.

Prompt effect has been given by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research to the provisions of the operating Act relative to the establishment of National. Research Scholarships.
The suggested regulations outlining the details of the scheme, and defining the method of procedure, have now been framed, and as Cabinet has approved them it is reasonable to expect that they will be gazetted at an early date. The regulations adopted by the Council make provision for the annual award of four National Research Scholarships to graduates of the New Zealand University, or other qualified persons, to enable them to carry on research in any branch of science l " or economics. A proportion of the scholarships will be offered purpose of encouraging research in connexion with matters relating to the industries of the Dominion. Each scholarship will be of the value of £IBO per annum, and a grant not exceeding a total of £25 will be made to defrav the cost of special apparatus or special books required for the research and the cost of transit while the scholar is engaged on the work. The apparatus and books, however, will remain the property of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The scholarship U tenable for one year at a university college or other institution approved by the Research Council, but th; tenure may be extended by a year in special circumstances approved by the Minister. Epcli scholar will be required to devote his whole time during the tenure of the scholarship to work connected with the research. f/nless under special circumstances the consent of the Research Council has been previously obtained, at the end of every three months the student will be obliged to furnish a report of his work, accompanied by a certificate from the professor or director or the university, department, or institution concerned, that the work has been done to his satisfaction. No publication of the results of the research is to be made by the scholar unless the consent of the Research Council is obtained, and the final instalment of the scholarship will not, he payable until the import of the results has been made in a form suitable for publication. Applications for the scholarshia have to be made on the prescribed form, nnd submitted to the Secretory of Scientific and "Industrial Research not. later thr.n February 14th in each year.
