LAUNCH ON FIRE.
MAN BADLY BURNED. [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, December 30. The motor-launch Gladys Grey, owned by Mr L. E. Smith, of Church street, Onehunga, was burnt to the water's edge in the Manukau Harbour. Mr Smith and his brother, Oliver, had been fishing near Cornwallis, about twelve miles from Onehunga. Mr Smith went forward on deck, and Oliver started the engine to go ashore, when it appeared to backfire into the carburettor, and the flames ignited the' benzine in the tank. A patent fire extinguisher yras used, but proved ineffective, and in a few minutes the launch was enveloped in flames. Mr 0. Smith was badly burned. The owner of the Gladys Grey lost a good .suit of clothes, and 30s in cash, with his launch, besides other articles of value. The launch was insured for £l2O in the National Insurance Company.
