SUMNER ITEMS.

The Weather. Now that the weather appears to be making amends for its previous bad behaviour, the holiday spirit is becoming more pronounced in Sumner. Yesterday, ear load after car load of children and their elders arrived to spend a day at the seaside, the cheap excursion rates for children enabling many to make the trip, who would otherwise be debarred. With a merry-go-round to keep them amused, icecreams for those who were prepared to pay, and an unlimited expanse of beach and sea, it is not surprising that many stayed until the last possible moment. Girl Guides. The members of the Fifth SumnerChristchurch Company of the Girl Guides recently entertained Mrs E. Richards, of the Esplanade, Sumner. The District Commissioner, who was present by special request, expressed her deep thanks for the work Mrs Richards had done, and presented her with one of the coveted Guides Badges, at the same time stating that this honour was rarely conferred, there being only three others in the Dominion. Mrs Eidiards feelingly acknowledged the gift and expressed her admiration for the loyalty and activity of the members of the Sumner Company. Seven Sumner members are leaving for the camp at Orari, on Monday.

General. At the time the lifeboat was being launched at the Sumner Pier, yesterday morning, to go to the assistance of the yachtsmen who were struggling in the breakers, some officers of the Public Works Department were taking measurements at the launching stage with a view to the authorised work of reconstruction. The lifeboat "Rescue" was launched so smartly that they were glad to hurry out of the way. This, together with the "haul iu" on the return of the lifeboat gave them a very practical insight into the urgent needs of the brigade for better facilities.
