The party were in a big touring car, and on climbing one of the steep sections on tho New Plymouth side of the mountain, flames were seen issuing from the car. Two of the occupants (Messrs L. In an endeavour to suppress the flames, Ringer put on the emergency brake, which, however, would not hold, and tM car started to go down lull and over the side. Ringer managed to jump clear, the car went hurtling down to the bottom of the valley, a sheer drop of 200 feet. With it went all the luggage, which was consumed in the fire that completely destroyed the car. The party had a narrow escape, for had they not got out in time, they must have been dashed fo death.
