HAXMER SPRINGS. The cricketers were unfortunate in having a rough night fcr their dance on Friday, but a very enjoyable evening resulted. The hail was atiractively deeomted by Misses Hodges. J. \V. p Dyer presiding. The balance-sheet showed n small credit. The following oflicers were elected:—■ Patron. Mr T. Chapman: president, Mr T. C. Robinson; fourteen vice-presi-dents; (di;l> captain, Mr C. Xeale; vicecaptain. Mr J. F. Banks: secretary and treasurer; Rev. J. \V. P. Dyer: selectors, captain and vice-captain; general committee, captain, vice-captain, secretary, and Messrs F. Graham and C. Moor; delegates to the Amuri Pub-Association, captain and secretary. It was decided to support the district st'.omc in the Association this season. CULVERDEN. Early las-t- week the Culverden Hotel changed hands, Ca'pt Mitchell having takeu over the license The outgoing licensee. Mr B. Diederirh, was entertained at a farewell social bv his many friends. Mr H. R. JJaveson was in tho chair. Several toasts wore honoured and Mr Dietlei iih was pre-sented with- a canteen dinner set. On Friday evening a large gathering of member? of tbe Farmers' Union assembled in the hall to an address by Mr J. D. Hall, president of the Canterbury branch of the Farmers' Union. ■Mr Ward. Government Field Instructor, accompanied Mr Hall. Mr M. Bethell was chairman ,in the absence of Mr ,F. Gallagher. Mr Hall lectured on aims and objects of the Fanners' Union, and spoke on organisation, farmers' fir'Ance, taxation, adjustment, ; agricultural education, co-operative marketing, and farmers' insurance. Mr Ward gave'a lecture on top-dressing, pasturing and the value of manures. '■.'.,'. The residents of the . district. have ,been trying for some time to get - a. train to and from Christchurch on Wednesdays. At the meeting held bv tbe Farmers' Union on Friday, Mr J. S. Kennedy, secretary, asked those present if they would support the service if ina.ugura.ted. Two-thirds of those jresem intimated that they would. A great many residents of the district who were not present at the meting would also travel by this train, and it is honed that the Railway Department wit) soo their way clear to do something in the matter. •j.-. WAIPARA. During the past week showery and unsettled -weather has been experienced. On Friday there was a heavy downfall of rain, : over half an inch falling in a few hours. The ground w very wet, and there is little growth in the pastures. Farm work is very much behind owing to the unsettled weather conditions. On Saturday evening, Mr Collins, one of the Alliance lecturers, gave an address on Temperance. There was not a very larpc attendance owing to the unfavourable weather. Mr A. S. Whyte, the successful rural mail contractor, took up. his duties last week, and already the settlers are expressing their satisfaction at the convenience of the delivery. BELFAST. At ibe monthly meeting of the Belfast School Committee there, were present: :-Messrs W. P. Spencer (chairman'), "\W Price, W. Sellers, W. Skidmore. K. Graham, A. Johnson, D. C. McArtlvur and A. E. Lawn. Ihe headmaster reported a roll number of '.#-. It was decided to apply Tor a porch at, Spencorville School. A circular letter was received from the Agricultural Committee regarding tree-planting by- pupils of primary schools. The committee strongly approved cf the proposal and offered sug"estions. vA nmtract has been let for. "Telling and cutting up trees in the main school grounds. It was reported to the committee that certain persons had been helping themselves to the fuel at the infant school It was decided to hold a windup social in the Town Hall at a future date The Visiting Committee appointed for the ensuing month is Messrs Sellers and Price.
PREBBLETON. Recently the male members of the Tennis Club formed a working bee for the purpose of repairing and ton-dress-inc the warts in readiness for the season's play. A large number ot volunteers tun»ed out to nelr and a sinuous day s work resulted in the ?«W beinc satisfactorily completed. Inernooil tea was provided by somo of tS lady members. DARFIELt). An enjoyable social evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs S.' W. Hayes, Ihirfield, last Wednesday, when the men who have been installing electricity in the district, were entertained. The evening was spent in music and games. On Friday evening the Orange Budden Lodge** No. 48,. held .its annual social. The social'took the form of a Vionoert and supper, followed l\v -a. dance. County Grand Master, Bro. Rickcrbyl arid the' Rev. Robertson. The accompaniments were plaved by Misses D. White and M. Taylor and Mr H, Ss.il. Bro. N. Turner, of Cliristcburch, delivered an address. An apology was received from the Rev. J. W. Parker. Visitors were present, from sister Lodges at Christehurrh, Oust, lx3Cston and Southbridge.
