Writing in Wallington (Surrey) -parish magazine, a correspondent recalls that it was a Surrey man. Sir Richard Weston, who first introduced turnips as a field crop into England. "Weston was a Roman Catholic and a Royalist, and was obliged to fly to Holland after the Civil War. It was there that, he studied turnip cultivation, and on his return to England he laid out plantations at Guildford, Merrow, and Clandon.
