PERSONAL. Ia view of her impending departure to take up'her residence in Christchurch. Miss T. Boddington, who has been a member of the Ashburton Ladies' Golf Club for some years, was on Saturday presented with an ebony hairbrush, comb, and mirror as a token of regard in which she was held by members of the club. General News. G. Bay, nn Ashburton Football Club player in the match against Hinds on Saturday, was unfortunate in having his right collarbone injured, necessitating medical attention. Very unpleasant weather conditions in the nature of a strong north-west wind were experienced in Ashburton yesterday. It was certainly more acceptable than the rain, but the appearance of the Borough Council water-cart to suppress the large clouds of dust, would have been welcomed. The snooker tournament for a case of silver spoons, which has been in progress at the Eeturned Soldiers' Club for some time, has been won by E. Vessey (10 on), who defeated T. Glendinning (scr) on Saturday evening. Glendinning receives a bedroom clock as second prize, while C. Stills and D. Smith have to play-off for the third prize, a leather wallet. A meeting of the Guessing Competition Committee in connexion with the forthcoming Labour Day gala was held last night. Mr W. Osman was appointed chairman, and Mr J. A. P. Munro secretary. It was agreed to run three competitions and offer substantial prizes for each. The printing and arrangements in connexion with the distribution thereof were left in the hands of the chairman and secretary."

Music Examination. The following Convent pupils obtained a pass in the Trinity College music examination conducted last week, by Mr George Vincent, F.T.C.L.: Licentiate grade—Marjoric Dunn. Associate —Margaret M. Hanrahan and Eva Soal. Senior —Honours, Mary D. Bland. Intermediate—Piano: Veronica Burgess, Kathleen McDonnell, Florence Dunn, Grace Dunn. Violin: Marjorie E. Dunn and Norman Thomas. Junior—Piano: Eileen McGuigan, Ella Flyn, Frances McGuigan, Kathleen Bland, and Elsie Burgess. Violin: Mary. Welsh. Preparatory—Honours: Maureen Hanrahan and Adele Fooks. Pass: Jean Phelan, Dorothy Burgess, Phyllis Bishop, and Mary Hanrahan. First steps—Elma Smith and Mary Ludford. Musical Club. Despite the adverse weather conditions there was a good attendance at a meeting of the Ashburton Musical Club; which was held on Saturday night, and took the form of a "National Evening." The programme for tho club's next evening is to be arranged entirely by new members. Saturday's programme, which wa3 the works of composers of various nationalities, is as follows:—Pianoforte solo, Claude Debussy's (French) "First Arabesque," Miss B. Claridge; song, Lewis Carey's s(English) "Break, Break, Break," Misb I. Jainc; song, Welsh national air, "All Through the Night," Mrs H. Naylor; song, Spohr's (German) "Bose Softly Blooming," Mrs A. T. Smith; vocal duet, Mozart's (English) "Speak To Mc Only," Mesdames H. Naylor and A. T. Smith; song, Incangelo Del Leuto's (Italian), "Dimmi Amor," Miss B. Claridge. Clay Bird Shooting. There was a good attendance at tho shoot of the Ashburton Gun Club on Saturday when two 4 and one 10 clay bird matches were contested. The latter whijh was for a trophy presented by Mrs J. Drummond, was won by J. Chambets. The results are as follows: — Four bird match—J. Mora (13yds) 4, H. White (12yds) 4, W. Bobinsou (19yds) 3, J. Chambers (12yds) 3, J. Drummond (15yds) 3, F. Wally (12 yds) 3, T. Parish (14yds) 3, A. Corbitt (11yds) 3. Ten bird match—J. Chambers (12yds) 10, S. Knox (12yds) 9, H. White (13yds) 8, F. Wally (12yds) 8, J. Mora (14yds) 7, t. Parish (14yds) 7. Four bird match —K. Robinson (19yds) 4, S. Knox (12yds) 4, W. Timms (15yds) 3. Knox beat Robinson in the shoot-oft.

ABhbnrton Sub-Union At the weekly meeting of the Ashburton County Rugby Sub-Union held last evening, the president (Mr W. F. Watters) presided over a good attendance of members. Those present were: Messrs H. J. Chapman, R. H. Biggar, H. W. Beaumont, A. Thomson, J. C. C. McLachlan, J. Smith, M. Timmings, F. Pritchard, A. Lane, H. Sarney, R. H. Loy, W. R. Tucker, and A. A. Fooks. "With reference to the Union's application to the New Zealand Rugby Union for financial assistance to send a representative team on tour to the West Coast during the next season, advice was received to the effect that the application would be a matter for next season's, management committee. It was decided to inform the Eiffelton Club that its entry for the seven a-side tournament could not be accepted until it had affiliated with the Union. The Union's rules, which were revised by a' special sub-committee, with the exception of a few minor alterations, were adopted. Mail Notices. Grice and Miss Daisy Watson tied with 135 points, and in the play-off Miss D. Watson won. Mrs J. B. Lambie secured 126 points. The men's prize was won by Mr J. B. Lambie with 162 points, Mr A. P. Bruce being second with 148 points, and Mr A. Watson third with 147 points. BARRHILL. There was a record attendance at the Barrhill euchre"tournament on Saturday ovening. The prizes were won by Miss M, Hurst and Mr P. Clinton. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss A. Bishop and Mr J. Brawley. MOUNT SOMERS. Under the hands of its owiier Mr John Murray, the building known as the old hall is fast being demolished and sold. On Thursday night Mr G. L. Hood presided over a fair attendance'at the

annual meeting of tho Tennis Club. The balance-sheet showed that the funds remained much as last year—acredit balance, of £(5. Tho chairman congratulated tho B team in winning the Mid-Canterbury tournament. The tea arrangements last season were considered satisfactory and are to bo continued. The club is moving to become incorporated immediately. Travelling expenses last season were considered too great, and a motion was passed that the executive should consider some scheme for helping the country clubs, whiah do nearly three times the travelling that town clubs do. A scheme is to be drawn up by the committee. The following officers were elected: —Patroness, Mrs John Hood; president, Mr G. Bland; vice-presidents, Hon. Nosworthy, Captain Neill, Major Bond, Captain Morgan and Messrs It. Nosworthy, C. J. Peter and R. Peach; club captain, Mr G. L. Hood; vicccaptain, Mr P. H. Jones; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. T- Bull; committoe, Mesdames Hood, Jones and WhelLani, and Messrs W. MoClimont, Herron and Williams. Opening day was left to arrange for some suitable Saturday at an early date. A motion was passed to record appreciation of tho services of the late ( patron, Mr John Hood. HIGHBANK. The Highbank residents held another euchre tournament on Friday night. The weather was stormy, but in spite of this more than the usual number turned out. The effort- is in aid of the Sunday School prize and building funds, and these will be considerably augmented. The ladies' first prize was won by Mrs A. Ireland, with 34 points. The second prize was awarded to Miss Merry, with 30 points. The gentlemen's first prize was won by Master B. Cleeve, with 30 points, the second being awarded to Mi- Jae. Simpson, . with 28 points. After the tournament the prisv.-r; were presented. CHERTSEY. The fortaigjhtly sneeting of the Chertsev Lodge, No. 90, was held in the hall on Thursday. Bro. IX Cameron, KG., presided. One member, now in the Christchurch Hospital, was reported on the funds. One candi- j date was initiated into the Order. It was decided to hold a degree meeting next Lodge nighf. The newly installed offices were congratulated on the efficient manner in which they had carried out the initiation ceremony. i
