PIONEER'S DEATH.
MR ALEXANDER M'DONALD. By the death of Mr Alexander McDonald, of 205 Cameron street East, at the'advanced age of eighty-four years, another old identity was removed from the Asbbm-ton district. . The late Mr McDonald was-born at Ruthven, Kingussie, Scotland, where his father was manager of the Cluny Mains estates for Sit Cluny Maepherson Grant. As a young roan he emigrated, to 'New Zealand to join his elder brother, John McDonald. Together they prospected on, the Wcstland goldaelds, and worked at road-making, helping to form the.Otira road. Mr John McDonald took upland and commenced, farming, 1 and Mr Alex. McDqnald made his home in Ashburton forty odd years ago. As a young man he was a well-known competitor at the Caledonian Sports, frequently winning prizes for the dances of his native land. A very strong man, he had never had a day's illness, and .the end was just u tranquil passing away. The-late Mr.MeDonaJd never married, and his oriiy New Zealand relatives are the children of the pioneer, brother, who predeceased him by some. .eighteen years.
