DAMAGED CARGO
DISCHARGED FROM KENT.

AUCKLAND, September 7.
The discharge of damaged cargo from the steamer Kent was continued on Saturday and Sunday. Of 1500 tons of cargo which No. 2 hold contained a large quantity, was totally destroyed. The debris is, being thrown on to a barge, and the rubbish will be taken ta sea. , ~ Any cargo which may rbe saleable is being stacked on the wharf, and in a shed. The damaged cargo consists of all kinds of merchandise, some so badly burned that it is hardly recognisable. The discharging of the cargo is slow. ,It will probably take all this week to empty No. 2 hold. The cost of the salvage -work will be very heavy, as the wages of the waterside workers ryn into a .goodly sum.. They are being paid 7s 6d an hour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and-lis 3d* per hour from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Yesterday being Sunday, they were being paid 35s an hour right through. For the fall week of seven days, the wages of each man will total £4O 10s. Whether all the damaged cargo will be discharged at Auckland from No. 1, 2, and 3 holds has not been decided.
