ST. ANNE'S HOME.

RESPONSE TO APPEAL. Ther© lias been a very encouraging response made to the appeal to the parishes to promise regular support for St. Anne's Home for girls, says the | "Church News." It will he remembered that at last Synod the affairs of the Home were investigated by a commission, and as a result, Synod commended the work of the Guild to the Diocese. Each cure was then approached with a request for a definite minimum subscription, based roughly on. its income, and so far 26 parishes have signified their intention to endeavour to raise their quota—some, in fact, have already sent it in. The appeal seems to have met with a larger sympathy, and none has refused to help. There remain, of course, about half of the cures to reply, but if equally favourable response is made, the Guild will be enabled to carry on its work .at . least on the present scale. One very encouraging development has taken place. Mrs Burdon, of Woodbury, visited the Home and was impressed with the need for better conditions and she undertook to raise the cost of certain improvements. By arrangement with the Guild, these were to include the en- ! largement of the dining-room by 16 feet length, in such a way as to permit later the adding of cubicles above. In addition, the kitchen was to be improved so as to facilitate the essential work of training" the girls in domestic matters. Mrs Burdon had succeeded in raising £92 of the amount she had aim ed at when she had to leave on a visit to England, and we understand that she intends to raise the balance on her return. Meanwhife, the Guild had plans prepared and. at last meeting of the Council it accepted the tender of Mr Graveston for the work at £277 10s, this including tEe painting of the building. The alterations are to be put in hand immediately, and when completed, should very greatly simplify the work of the Sisters, which the Synod commission found to "be carried on under much disadvantage. The Council hopes to raise the cost of the alterations by special donations, but in the alternative, may have to trench upon the very small*reserve fund it has set up.
