CERCLE FRANCAIS.
—•——' - There was a large attendance of the members of the .".Cercle Francais" at Te Whare on Friday evening. The usual half-hour's French conversation was followed by a comprehensive lecture on the modern French novel by Professor Blunt. The main tendencies of the later novels were marked, and well-chosen extracts from the novels of Marcel Prost and others read to illustrate them. • Professor Blunt was cordially thanked for his instructive and entertaining lecture by the president, M. Tonnoir, who reviewed many of the points Professor Blunt had- referred to.. - • • - Supper was then served, and further conversation •in French concluded the evening. Among those present were: Mesdames Dalton, Carey, Greenwood, Just, Tomlinson, Beck, Dunne, and Henderson, Misses M. Hall, Mulvany Gray,. E. and A. Fairbairn,' Speight, Buchanan, Holderness, . Horth, Molloy, Gresson, Rowe, Macmillan Brown, and • Toss will, Professor Blunt, Messrs.Tonnqir, Hillier, McLaren, Henderson, Cato, Lowe, Kaye, and G. Pickles.
