WORK IN THE SCHOOLS. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TILEGEAM.) HAWER-A, July 4. The "Winter Show was concluded tonight' • After a successful season. To ho eligible to compete at tho show, each school must raise at least, two hundred and fifty seedling plants of two or more varieties of useful timber troo.s. Then each school is required to show (a) a tray or box of transplanted seedling plants of at least two varieties raised; (b) fnil notes on the.raising of the seedlings; (c) a.rt essay on some afforestation subject; (d) a general display of any work having a hearing on afforestation as, for example, tho collection of New Zealand timber. Probably the most valuable p.spect of tho whole work is that each ■child whoso parents are willing to find protection for tho seedlings is given at least one hundred to take home and ■plant permanently. The child is encouraged to keen accurate records of the growth of these, with notes,, Similar observations aro made of tho plantings about the school grounds.
