Greenslade) expressed the warm appreciation of the parents for the able manner in which Miss Crooks had carried on the school during Her term with them. They considered that the children had made pood progress under her care, and while they regretted her departure, they wished her every happiness in the future. Other speakers were Messrs G. 15. Murdoch anil 1). J. Morrow. Mrs Greensladc then handed Miss Crooks a silver tea service and an oxidised brass tray on behalf of the residents of the district. Yesterday, on the occasion of its anniversary the sei'vices of'the Ashburton ■ Salvation Army were conducted by Major F. AVallacc and Mrs' "Wallace, of Christchurch. The Ashburton branch of the Army has been established about 40 rears. At the Magistrate's Court, on .Saturday morning, before Mr lv. Clark, J.P., Joseph Shipley lloberts, a second of-' fender for drunkenness, was fined 10s, in default JS hours' imprisonment. A concert in aid of the Allenton Sports Club's funds 'was held in St. Stephen's Schoolroom on Saturday night, and as a result the club shoiild benefit considerably. Residents will welcome the news that on and after Monday 'next;* Ashburton will enjoy a, better and faster train service to Christchurch. In reply to the request of the chairman'oli the Ashburton County Council (Mr W. G. Gallagher) for a, train service 1o run daily, similar to that at present in operation between Ashburton and Christchurch on Wednesdays, the I?aihv(ty Department has replied to the effect- that, the usual 7.2'"! a.m. train from Christchurch to Ashbufton will leave Christchurch at 7.30 a.m., Dunsandel 8.4(5, L'akaia, ,o*2o, Chertsey 9.33, arriving Ashburton 10.2 a.m. The afternoon tra in .fi'oin (''hristchurch for Ashburton will leave Christchurch at 4.30 daily, Dunsandel 5.41, Hak'aia 6.13, Chertsey 0.20, arriving Ashburton at ti.55. This train replaces tho present 4.55 p.m. train on Wcdnos' days from Christchurch. The morning train from Ashburton for Christchurch will leave Ashburton at 8 daily, Chertsey 8.20, liakaia 8.48, Dunsandel D.16, arriving Christchurch at 10.30 a.m. On Wednesday this train replaces the present 7.50 a.m. train from Ashburton for Cliristcliurcli. In connexion with tlio local stock sales the past season lias been one of tlio most successful experienced for many years. On some sale days the yarding accommodation was quite inadequate. Tlio numbers of fat stock, especially lambs, sold here wero exceptionally large, particularly in the earlier part of tlie year. 'There wero also larger lines of store sheep offered this season. In this class the increase in the numbers of breeding ewes was most noticeable. Owing to the unsatisfactory arrangements ror wheat growing and the uncertainty as to the ultimate results fanners hero are- going in more extensively for sheep breeding and fat lamb rearing. They think that it is a belter and sounder proposition, the returns from sheep in most cases being better than, from wheat, as tho latter deteriorates the land. Vendors at tho local sales expressed their satisfaction with the prices realised this season. METHVEN.
