NORTH CANTERBURY.

GREENFARK. The benedicts held a meeting recently to arrange for their annual ball. Mr W. Kimber was elected chairman, Messrs J. Stalker and G. Pegley joint secretaries with the following committee: —Mrs Stalker and Messrs Breen, Schroeder and Campbell. It -was decided to hold the ball on July l()th. The Greenpark-Tai Tapu branch of the Fanners' Union held its meeting last week.. Mr H. Kimber was in the chair and an address was given by Mr T. Buxton on the Farmers' Union insurance scheme. The next meeting of the combined branch ■will be held at Tai Tapu, when an address will be given by Mr John Parlane. BROADFIELDS. The fortnightly euchre tournament and dance in aid of the school funds was held on Friday. The prizes were won as follows: —Ladies, Miss J. Turner 1, Mrs J. T. Gallagher 2; gentlemen, Mr J. Cuneen 1, iar M. Cuneen 2. The ladies' prizes were given by Mr J. Woodward. The music was supplied by Mr T. Traslc, extras being played by Mrs W. Ryan and Mrs J. Gallagher. Mr Gallagher was M.C. TAKAMATUA. The third of a series of six euchre tournaments was held in the school, when there was a good attendance. The first prizes were won by Mrs Geo. Phillips and Mr H. J. French, the consolation prizes going to Miss M. Lennon and Mr Ivan Hammond. Mr J. Ramsay kindly gave the prizes. An enjoyable dance was afterwards held, Mesdames H. Manson, E. Kingston, G. Phillips, and Miss M. Lennon supplying the music. Mr and Mrs W. Cattermole have returned frov a holiday in Christchurcli. Miss D.' Hammond (North Island) is the guest of Miss Clarice Hammond. Mr and Mrs P. Lennon are on a visit to Ashburton. SALTWATER CREEK. In spite of the weather, a big crowd turned out to the fortnightly cuchre tournament. After spirited play, the prizes went to Mrs Wilson and Mr J. Wilson. The ladies served supper. A dance followed, music being supplied by Mesdames H. Lang and L. Smith and the Misses Booth and Eder. Mr Powell was M.C. LEESTON. Members of the Ellesniere branch of the Plunket Society met at the residence of Mrs H. Neavo on Thursday afternoon to bid farewell to Mrs A. JGray, a vice-president, who is leaving for Blenheim. In asking Mrs Gray's acceptance of a clock, the president, Mrs Overton, referred to the great interest she had taken in the work of the society and to the loyal help she hao. given. Members wished her every happiness in her new home. A presentation was also made to Mr Gray in recognition of the help he had given the society in various ways. This consisted of a beautifully bound copy of Wordsworth's poems. The gifts were acknowledged in suitable terms. Mr and' Mrs Gray will be accorded a civic farewell at Leeston next week. AYLESBURY. At the fortnightly cuchre and dance tlfo" attendance was good, considering the bad'weather. The ladies' prizes went to Mrs H.. Walker and Mrs Wliyte, and the gentlemen's to Mr Somerfield and Mr Sclwyn Davis. After supper a dance was held to music supplied by Miss C. Harwood r Miss L. Bradley, and Mr C. Davis. Miss Wright gave recitations. Mr Nicholl was M.C. GLENROY. The school children and a number of friends mot to bid farewell to Mr W. R. McPherson, who has been appointed assistant-master of the Allenton School. Oh'behalf of those present, Mr G. Hunt asked Mr. McPherson to accept a handsome Russian leather wallet containing money, in token of their esteem. Mr McPherson suitably responded. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies, after which the singing of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and three hearty cheers for the guest of tho afternoon brought proceedings to a close. Mr McPherson has been in charge of the Glenroy School for over three years, during which time ho has endeared himself to all as a conscientious and sympathetic; teacher, and has also taken a lively interest in all matters affecting the welfare of the district. Miss Frances Turner, of Ashburton, has been appointed to take charge of the school.
