Gamble returned from Christchurch yesterday. Mr .jnuies Kobinson has disposed of his interest in the Ferry Hotel, llapahoe, to Mr .T. M. Houlahan, of Wangauui. formerly of the West Coast. Mr W. E. Leiteh. inspector of the Union Bank of Australia, returned to Chrislc.liUreh yesterday. Messrs B. Falck, J. 8. Hawkes. and A. ]J. Dobsoti. representing the Canterbury Automobile Association, returned to ('hristchurch on Saturday. Mr W. Tregurtha, Assistant District Traffic Manager, X.Z.R., Clirigtoluxrcli. left on his return to Canterbury by Saturday's express. Messrs D. J. Evans (Westlnnd Racing Club). A. l'erutti (Reefton Jockey Club), ami M. If. Houston (Westland Trotting Club) left on Saturday for "Wellington, where tliev will attend tlu Racing and Trotting Conference. Messrs T. E. Coates and M. Sir Frederick Miuehan, an old resident of Greymouth, died recently at Auckland at the age of Si years. The death is reported of Mr Peter A. ! Beyers, a WVst Coast pioneer, at the i nge of 70 years. Deceased died at the Cfrev Hospital. He was in tho Kumara > rush, and had lived of late at C'obden. The funeral was held this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. Mails Delayed. The firei~en refused t6 go to sea without tririliners, and a conference was lield in the afternoon. Robinson, who acted as spokesman) then said they were determined not to go to sea with6ut trimmers. Tho liremen had been asked again that morning to got Up steam but persisted in their frefusaL „ Evidence was also given by •B. Cunningham, manager of the company's Grfeymouth branch, and WilliStn Stewart Sinart, ciiief engineer of tho Waipori, Ml* Joyce said the men demanded trimmers because of the arduous nature of tho work firing the vessel to Sydney. Thfere were two firemen to the shift and six furnaces, and in view of this the firemen's demand appeared jUst. They were willing to take the vessel to sea if two or three trimmers were employed The argument that the ship had previously rUn. without trimmers did not provide a valid reason for their non-tm-ployment on the long run to Sydney. The Bench said the defendants had not kept faith with the company after signing With a full cognisance of their articles. He asked them if they were willing to obey orders. Defendants responded, "Yes. if we are given trimmers, but not otherwise.'' Each was then sentenced to one month s imprisonment in Greymouth gaol. It is reported that the men will be placed oil board tlio ship to-morrow and tho vessel will proceed to Sydney. The Weather.
