OBITUARY.
CANON CHARLES COATES. Canon Charles Coates, who died last night, was born at Whitby, Yorkshire, in 1847. Ho was educated privately, and at St. Augustine's College, Canterbury. He was vicar of AVaimate from 187t> to 1891, and of Lyttelton from the latter year to 1913. Since his retirement from active parochial work, Canon. Coates had acted as locum tehens at Avonsidc, Remuera, and various other S laces. .He was married in 1881 to Strict Louisa, daughter of Mr William Guise Bvittain, and had one son and two' daughters.
Mr W. J. Bolt, wuo died at Dunedin on Thursday, aged 90 years, was born at Bristol. During the Crimean war he was on a vessel which conveyed hay from Alexandria, in Egypt, to the British camp in South Russia, and was at Calcutta during the Indian mutiny. He was also a sailor on the ship conveying immigrants to Wellington when, as the result of an outbreak of fever on board. 35 persons died. Only two persons seized with tho malady recovered and Mr Bolt was one of them. He went to Dunedin in 1868. When' the Taicri and Peninsula Milk Supply Cov. was started in 1884, Mr Bolt became secretary, and in 1892 business manager, retiring from the managership in 1908 at the age of 73. For many vears he was a director of the South Island Dairy Association.
