NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
Tides. It will bo high tide on the beach today at 1.46 p.m., and in the river at 3.14 p.m., and to-morrow at 2.43 p.m., and 4.11 p.m. respectively. The Churches. The services at the Beach Churc'i tomorrow will be Holy Communion at 8 and 11 a.m.; evensong and anthem at 7 p.m. The vicar will preach at all services. At the evening service at the Xorth Brighton schoolroom the Rev. W. F. Ki'e-wles will preach. The services at the Methodist Church will be conducted at 11 a.m. bv Mr If. Holland; at IUO by the Rev. F.'T. Read (Communion), and at the South Brighton Hall at '2Ao p.m., by the Rev. F. T. Kead. At the morning service of the Presbyterian Church the subject wilt be: "A Faith that is Victorious in all Life's Trials"; in llio evening, "A Supreme Question." The Rev. j. S. Young will conduct both services. School Committee. The School Committee met on Wednesday. Present: Mr J. Buxton (chairman), the Pew C. W. I. Maclaverty, the Rev. F. T. Read, Mesdames Bellamy, and M. Moses, and Messrs E. A. Langford, A. E. Lawry, P. Nelson, J. Orsborn, and the secretary, Mr H. A. Glasson. Correspondence was received from the Minister of Education stating that it was to be regretted that the matter "of acquiring the property adjoining the main school on the eastern side, was problematical. If the matter of a training school was essential, and the Education Board would submit a proposal in connexion therewith, a grant for the purchase of a suitablo site would' be approved. The headmaster's report showed the roll-num-ber and the average attendance of the two schools to be respectively: Main school 00.1' and 55!), South Brighton CI and Hi. It was agreed to make application to 11ic Board for financial assistance in the matter of heating the school rooms. The Eev. F. T. Read's offer _to give an-ilhistrated lecture in connexion with his war services in aid of the school funds, was accepted,with thanks. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr Langford for his donation, and to Mr E. J. Howard. M.P., for the lecture he gave recently in aid of the school funds. The Rev. €. YW I. Maclaverty and Mr Langford were appointed a Visiting Committee. Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club.. .
In a friendly, match against the Heathcote Club, fired on the local range, the Brighton team won by 247 points to 234. The final round of the third, club competition resulted in a tie between Miss Park, Miss Dowding, and Mrs Buschl. Miss Park won the senior pendant, and Mrs Brooks's prize with a score of 35. Miss Tilleyshort and Miss Dowding gained a point for the junior pendant, and the former won the Tisdale . brooch. In their match against the Brooklyn (Wellington) Ladies' Club, the home team were defeated by 19 points. Jazz Club. The recently-formed Jazz Club held its opening night in the Pier Hall, which was tastefully decorated for the occasion. In spite of the weather the attendance was quite satisfactory, and a very jolly evening was spent by those present. Borough Council. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Thursday, the Mayor, Mr J. Gambb, presiding, when the rates for 1925-G were levied. At the conclusion of the business the Council eat an the Rawhiti Domain Board, when matters referring to the Rawhiti Domain Board Empowering Bill were considered. It was decided that either the Mayor or Cr. J. 11. Shaw should proceed to Wellington to wait upon. , the Local Bills Committee in further-1 anco of the' Board's proposals. • |
