ALLEGED EXTRAVAGANT LIVING.
BANKRUPT COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, July 1. Allegations that extravagant .living had been responsible for his bankruptcy •were made in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Frederick Theodore Badcoek, a cricket coach, was charged that having been adjudged a bankrupt he did by unjustifiable extravagance of living bring about his bankruptcy, an 4 that he contracted a debt of £2.1 10s 6d with .7. T. Lewis, without reasonable expectation of being able to pay it, as well as his other debts.
Badcock said to the Crown Prosecutor that he arrived in New Zealand under an engagement to the "Wellington Cricket Association at a salary of £5 a week. Shortly after arrival he began to run up large accounts, and iu two and a-half-months hie liabilities were £643 15s 3d. He had brought about his bankruptcy by extravagant living. Tho Official Assignee produced, a statement of defendant's affairs, which showed his liabilities to bo £468, and iis assets nil; * Accused was committed for trial, bail being fixed at £2OO. For the defonce, Mr C. G. Wilson, chairman of the "Wellington Cricket Association, said that although Badcoek was engaged at £250 per annum, it wad the guaranteed.minimum, lie had opportunities of increasing his salary considerably, but the infantile paralysis epidemic interfered with his earnings outside the amount guaranteed. He had also published a valuable book of advice on cricket which should bring in additional revenue.
