Following on a guarantee of safety and protection by the Kwantung Provincial Government, the main Customs house and wharf in Canton reopened. It is believed that German merchants urged this action, .'lho merchants have reopened their offices against the advice of the Consul. The Germans are wearing arm-bands with tho word "German" thereon. It appears that level-headed Chinese are ready to rettle matters diplomatically rather thai: by demonstrations. The steamer Empress of Asia sailed for Cauada with :i crew composed of University wardens and u«<ler-gr«au-ates, and with a Scoutmaster in charge of Boy Scouts as cabin-boys. An orderly demonstration occurred in Chinese territory at Shanghai. A demonstration occurred in the native city in Ticn-tsin, but all is quiet. SHAMEEN FIRING. MASS MEETING IN PEKING. (P.ECTEIt's TELEGRAMS.) (Received July 2nd, 12.40 a.m.) PEKING, July 1. A mass meeting in connexion with tho Shameen affair was poorly attended, some schools and colleges holding aloof. The national flag was not displayed, tut the Kuoniintang and Red Flags wero much in evidence. Prominent members of the Kuomintang delivered speeches. A noteworthy feature of the demonstration was the presence of a group of General Feng-Yoh-Siang's soldiers, carrying flags inscribed, "Sacrifice life for tho sake of humanity." The situation is otherwise quiet.
