OPEN-AIR SCHOOLS.

MR J. CAUGHLEY'S CRITICISM. (?BES3 ASSOCIATION TBLEGBAM.) AUCKLAND, July 1. Mr J. Caughlcy (Director of Education), at a meeting of the Board of Edu cation, said tho claims mado for open air schools were out of all proportion to what tho results really were. Tho information which had been gained from other parts of tho world was not applicable to New Zealand. Comparisons should be made with new schools, not with the older building 3. It was shown that the air in tho rooms of the newest schools in Auckland could be changed 40 to 50 times an hour even when the wind was not; strong enough to blow out a match. It was sufficient, from a hygienic point of view, to change the air 15 times an hour. The stimulating effects of sunlight had also been exaggerated. Benefits would undoubtedly obtain in schools of two, or three rooms, but ho did not want people to be led astray by the extravagant claims made.
