SOUTH ISLAND PUBLICITY.
PROGRESS LEAGUE SUGGESTION. At its moating last night, tho executive) of tho Canterbury Progress League considered the matter 01 attracting tourist traffic- -to the youth Island iby means of an extensive publicity campaign. The subject was introduced by a rpport submitted by the League's .organiser, Mr P. 11. Climie. The report stated that an opportunity had. : now arisen for making a. new and excellent use of South Island advertising in order to attract tourist traffic. Air J. E. Broadfoot, who lately retired from the position of Chief Postmaster at Christchurch, had accepted a position as Auckland representative of a number of South Island motor service companies, for whom he would act as tourist and publicity agent.. Provision also had been made in. tlio terms of Mr Broadfoot's engagement that he should act as representative of South Island progress and development leagues. The report continuod that the Otago Expansion League would co-operate with any action the .Canterbury League took in the matter, and the suggestion had come from tho Southern body that they should encourage visitors to, the Exhibition to visit other parte of tho South Island, so that provinces such as Canterbury, which were giving the Exhibition friendly support, might be gainers through their neighbourliness. The Southern League also suggested th&b'a conference concerning the matter; should be held at Dunedin within the next few weeks to plan a definite policy of publicity. Last year the nunibor of tourists who visited the Dominion, as shown by the* migration statistics, was only 7423, but in view the splendid attractions New Zea§d could offer in the way both of nery and sport, it was considered by those who hadjvbeen studying $lO question, quite within tho of possibility to increase the annual number sevenfold by judicious advertising. The chairman, referring to tho report, stated that the matter was certainly one well worth going into. It was suggested that the secretaries of the various Leagues in tl*e South Island should confer and draw, up. a report on the proposed publicity campaign. He moved that the League approve of the matter of the conference, and appoint Mr Climie to 'attend. The motion was carried.
