THE CATHEDRAL ORGAN.
DISMANTLING TO COMMENCE THIS MONTH. In all thero are 2233 pipes in tho old Cathedral organ, tho dismantling of which will commence this month. Over 300 pipes oro being sent to England to "bo re-Toiced and coupled Up tbo new mechanism, and this operation, will involve two stops. Other pipes will be added here. \ . . Tho dismantling operations, it is understood, will not entirely prevent the organ being used, as certain stops can bo "cut out." But recitals will not bo practicable. Tho organ.-Will be in uso until the vital operations actur ally tako place. Many of the old stops are being retained, as they are irreplaceable, having greatly mellowed an tone in a similar-manner to the improvement, with use and age, of a violin. It has been, suggested that the keyboard, which, has been used by three notable musicians—the late Mr Wells, tho late Mr Tcndall, and tho present organist and choirmaster, Dr. J. C. be preserved for sentimental reasons, and placed on show in fiomo conspicuous place, I hat practice is carried'out very largely in England in the case of the dismantling of old and famous organs. Tho present organ was shipped to New Zealand bv Hill and Son m August, 1881, arriving by the Waimate. At that time the "Church News" contained an extract forwarded by Mr E. Seager, and written by a well-known' musician as follows:—"Tho highest resources of the organ-buildmg art will bo brought to bear on tho Christehurch organ, specie,! attention being paid to the arrangement and appearance of the keyboards. The three manuals are of fine ivory with rounded edges . . ." Since its installation the organ has been considerably added to. The first organ used in the Cathedral was tho Meiivale organ, which played a largo part at tho opening of the Cathedral. That organ also will be dismantled and a new ono erected when the new church is built.
