MUNICIPAL CONCERT HALL.
TENDERS CLOSED. FIFTEEN COMPETITIVE OFFERS. Tenders have now closed for the erection of tho new Municipal Concert Chamber, tho lowest) tender being £43,215. A total of 15 tenders were received by the architects, Messrs Dawe and Willis, this number constituting something of a record, aud demonstrating tho keenness with which, builders hare- contended for the work. It is interesting to note that tho lowest tender, tho figure of wiiieh is mentioned abovo is somewhat higher than the architects' estimate for the work (£42.500), But at tho same time- the architects' figure /was remarkably close to tho mark. The loan raised for the purpose of erecting tho Concert Hall was £35,000, and the City Council is empowered to raise an additional 10 per cent, on this sum, bringing tho total for the purpose up to £38,500, or £4715 below the lowest tender for the contract.
Another interesting fact in connexion with the tendering is that the difference between the three lowest tenders could bo covered by the sum of £l4o— indication of the manner in which builders have competed to secure the work. So far, of course, the contract has not been let, but the whole matter will probably be discussed at tho meeting of the City Council on Monday night.
