MOTORS BEFORE GOODS.
WHAT SYDNEY IS BUYING. More than one busiuess man in Sydney has recently expressed his uneasiness with regard to the hire-purchase system, which has grown to suelv large proportions in connoxion with the motor-ear trade. It is felt that while people are able to acquire cars on oxtended credit terms, says a Sydney paper, It is only to be expected that tbev .will make use of the opportunities' offered, and curtail their expenditure in . household commodities and wearing apparel. In this connexion it is interesting to note two paragraphs in a trade report from New York. One of these states that the automobile industry, which it was thought was headed towards a period of drastic curtailment, has improved its position, the output for March having been surprisingly large. The other, dealing with the textile trade, reports that cotton mills are "only fairly busy," while the woollen goods trade is at a low ebb. The inference, says the paper quoted, is obvious, and is as applicable to Australia as to the United States.
