FARMERS' UNION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The' executive of .the North . Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union met yesterday, Mr J. D. Hall presiding. Others present were: Messrs W. Bailey, C Mcintosh, F. A. Wagner, J. K. Cullen, A. M. Carpenter, H. Dickhoff, A. Fisher, J. D. Henderson, £'. A. Foster, a. H. Hasea.ll, W. W. Mulholland and K. T. McMillan. ' It was decided, that only three , subcommittees should be set up—General, Agricultural, and Dairy. Committees were set up as follows: General—Messrs A. M. Carpenter, D. Jones, W. Bailey, F. A. Wagner, E. G. Wells. Agricultural—Messrs C. Mcintosh, W. W. ' Mulholland, E. A. Foster, H. Olliver, J. 11. Cullen, A. Fisher. Dairy—Messrs H. Dickhoff, H. J3. Pery-m-an, G. M. Hassall (one each to be nominated by the North Canterbury Dairy Association, Christchurch Dairymen's Association, and the Herd Testing Association). j The president and s vice-president will act j ex officio on all committees. The Dominion secretary advised that the provincial secretaries' conference would be held in Wellington on July 27th. Mr A. E. G, Lyttle. secretary of the branch, was appointed to attend the conference. A letter was received from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce concerning; recent criticism by the Union and stating that the Chamber was glad to know that no hostile criticism, was intended. ■ The. 'Chamber stated it was at all times willing to 'cooperate, with the Union in furthering farming interests. The- letter *nade reference t» the work that was being done by the Chamber in co-operation with the economics department of Canterbury College. Mr Mulholland advocated rthat the Union should go into the question, of arranging with . the economics department of Canterbury College to be supplied with a regular statistical information regarding the farming industry. The chairman said that at a recent banquet given by the Chamber,... Mr E.' H. Wyles, an ex-ehairma7i, offered on behalf of that body to co-operate with farmers. A. number of members spoke in of the proposal, stating that the inforniation which the economic department could give would be of advantage to farmers. The letter was received, and it was decided to reply that opportunity' arose the Union would be glad to take advantage of any opportunity to co-operate with the Chamber. It was decided to thank the Canterbury Progress League and district traffic manager for their efforts which had resulted in the 8.40 -a.m. express from ' Dunedin stopping at Dunsandel. A communication was received from the Meat Producers' Board with reference to the selection of the Electoral Committee.^ The chairman stated that the local district would now extend from Amuri to Aahbur--lon inclusive. Nominations had to be in hand bv July 16th. Mr Mvlholland moved that representatives of the North and Mid-Canterbw branches of the Farmers' Union, the Metropolitan A. and P. Association, and the Sheepowners' Union be invited to a conference to coneider the matter and elect candidates. After some discussion, in which it was suggested that all A. and P. Associations north of the Bangitata should be included, it was decided that the matter should be left to the chairman to interview the local A. and P. Association and the Sheepowners' Union. The president, vice-president (Mr B. T. McMillan), W. W. Mulholland, C. Mcintosh, A. M. Carpenter, J. K. Cullen were appointed to represent the branch at the confe.r--e IA 'complaint from Mr Davis, of Waiau, concerning the freight on hardwood timber was referred to the Dominion conference. It was decided that the branch should convene a conference for July 22nd to go into the question of setting up a gran growers' organisation.
