CANBERRA FIRE.
(by cable—rr.r.ss association'— cornuGHT.) (AUSTRALIA* AXD K.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION'-) SYDNEY, July 1. One estimate places the damage to the steamer Canberra at £OO.OOO. The cargo escaped witli slight damage. The suspicion of possible incendiarism was caused by the discovery of a mysterious white powder at the scene of the outbreak. This is now being analysed. Another possible explanation of the outbreak is that as the electric lighting was cut off aboard at midnight, candles had been used for lighting after that hour. Later. The Government Analyst reported that the mysterious powder proved to be sulphat-e of zinc.
