THEATRE ROYAL. * "THE MERCHANT OF VENICE." Despite the atrocious weathtvr last niglit, tbe Tneatrc Royal was packed for the second performance of "The Merchant of Venice" by the Moscovitch Company. This fact was a remarkable tribute to the worth of Mr Moscovitch and his Company. Mr Maurice Moscovitch, as a Jew, made of Shylock what only a Jew could. It was a brilliant piece cf characterisation and a memorable performance altogether. The impulsiveness of the character was cleverly concealed at the beginning by a suavity cf manner a. most -x>rtontnus na!iirc, and us the p-ot developed tbe real sevazery cf the man found full expression. Miss Jean Robertsons Portia was also an .-.rtistic triumph, lortia was one of Shakespeare's most perfect women, a ladv of wit. of understanding, ot strength, of action, and altogether ~ character difficult to portray with consistent satisfaction. Miss Eileen Sparke as entered into the spirit of that roguish little 1-idv and »;ivp a verv agreeable performance. Mi'S laobll AVilford a* Jessica proved heiselv an artist of high worth. Bassanio, os interpreted by Mr William Stack, proved in every way a proper gentleman Mr N'pt Madison, who took the part ot Lancelot Gobbo, provided plenty of animation and clowning. AH the other characters wer> in competent hands. •Tl- Merchant of Venice" will be repeated to-nivnt, and will give way to-morrow night to "TVio Great Lover." "Merchant of Venice Matinee." In resnonse to many requests from colleges and schools, a matinee performance of "The Merchant of Venice." will be given on Saturday, the booking for which is already very' heavy.
