He informed *he team that if the ■ figures were correct (he net being aware of > the resolution) he was of the opinion that ; the player was eligible. ELLESMERE SUB-UNION. A special meeting cf the Ellesmere Rugbv Sub-Union was held at Lceston on Monday. Present— Messrs H. J. Conway (president*, U. T. McMillan. W. E. Cox, j. H. Rcstall ,T. S. McClelland, 11. Gardiner, T. G. Harper, H. O. Jones, K. \\ . Macpherson, L. Harris, 'M. J. Scott, F. J. Mottrani isecretiLry). The Huninui Sub-Union snares ted July 38th as the date for the challenge match for the Southbriclge Shield. It was decided to reply that August loth v.-<r,i!d bo the first date available. Malvern applied for July ISth as the date for its match. The secretary reported having replied that this date was not available. The Peninsula Sub-Union issued a challenge for the Delarijey Shield. The president, vice-president, and Mr R. T. McMillan were appointed a sub-committee to Sx dates for further representative matches. Messrs W. C. Eggleton, R. Bruce, and F. J. Mottram were appointed selectors of a school team to meet a team from Ashburton. It was left to the selectors to get into touch with Ashburton regarding a date, and to report to the next meeting. The Canterbury Rugby Union advised that on account of the Ellesmere and Ashburton Sub-Unions beni? unable to agree on a date for the Southbridje Shield match, the latter had appealed to the Union under the rules, the Union having fixed July -4th as the date. The letter was received, and it was decided to reply expressing regret that the Union did not give Ellesmere an opportunity of stating its position before tho date was finally fixed. It was stated that in - of the wet weather, the Southbridge Recreation Ground was likely to "bo in a muddy condition next Saturday. The conditions under which the Shield was accepted stipulate that the match must be played at Southbridge. A deputation was appointed to inspect the Southbridge ground, and if they considered it unfit- for play, were authorised to secure any available paddock in the township that would suit. In reply to a letter from tho Sub-Union, i enquiring whether members of the College team would be available for all representative matches, the Director of the College, Mr R. E. Alexander, waited on the meeting and explained that the College football season was regarded as finished at the close of the second term, and after the term holidays, no more footba 1 ! was played except for a special reason. He was not in favour of allowing a few footballers to continue playing while the rest of the team stood on the line, as was the case with representative matches. The College players would not bo available, therefore, for ally football after the holidays. The United Club protested against the decision of the referee in the Southbridge v. United third grade match on June 6th, "in which it was stated that a try had been awarded to the Southbridge team against the United team. The referee, Mr F. A. Strack, attended the meeting and gave his version of the incident. It was decided that the game should be cancelled, and replayed if the scores coulH affect the competition result. A junior player, who was ordered off the field iii the Lees ton-v. United match, was cautioned. A discussion took place as to the ground on which the McClelland Cup match, between the winners and runners-up' in the senior competition, should be played. The rules governing the Cup provide that the first'match must be played on the Southbridge ground, and that in future years the Sub-Union shall fix the ground. Delegates expressed the view that there was no need to legislate with regard to the ground this year. There would be ample time for that when the occasion arose. The secretary of the Leeston Club notified that application was being made for permission to pla.y future matches on the Show Ground, and requested the SubUnion's approval of the change, should the A and P. Association grant permission. Approval was unanimously granted'. The Waihora Club applied' for permission to play D. M. Lamb, of Birdling's Flat.
